Replacement Sump & MOT Work

Hi all,

I am just in the process of pulling the sump off my 2.7 terrano and as people have said it's a bloody pain. I believe that the front diff has to come off completely? Can anyone confirm?

Would I get away with removing one hub and just unbolting the opposite drive shaft and pulling the front diff over to the other side to remove it? Or do I need to dismantle both sides?

I'm also doing the front disks and pads, I've found that the calliper carriers bolts are super tight, are they normal thread or left handed can anyone advise?

Also the sliders are set fast on the carriers, so does anyone have any usable spares for sale? Preferably with bolts so I can just grind the existing ones off? I could also use a second hand sump too if anyone has a good spare for sale...

I'm fitting a new front exhaust pipe too, so I'm having fun under the terrano. I can't believe we've had it a year already, it's not let us down and has done the work we required so it's been a great asset.

I've happily stumped up another £10 to renew my membership of the forum too, I think it's the best tenner I spent last year so I'm sorry to say you'll have to put up with me for another year....

slider pins can often be freed with heat and gentle working, if you sheer them of they can be drilled out but not the best of jobs, why do you need a replacement sump? I have one on a 98 TDi is your dipstick by the starter? Rick

I presume your sump has developed a leak? My Maverick one did the same and I just couldn't be bothered to fix it, it looked like too much hassle to me but it do it if I had to on the Terrano. From memory the front diff has to come out, just remove the driveshafts, crossmember and out it will come, I think.

I have recently just done my brakes as the truck was pulling to the side when I was braking, I was able to free up and service the one side but the other the slide pins were seized solid and even with a butane lamp and a decent purchase on the pins with a socket and carrier in the vice, I managed to snap off both :doh

Rick should be able to sort you out for a sump :thumb2

I find with the 19mm bolts that hold the carriers to the hub, turn the wheel to help you out and get a long reach 19mm 1/2" socket and a breaker bar on them, they are very very tight if not been removed for a while.

Hi guys, thanks for your info and input, I've managed to get a bit of time on the terrno and I have the sump off and in my hand, Rick, you asked if the dip stick was by the starter motor, yes that's correct, do you have one to suit? If so how much do you want for it please? Including shipping to Scunthorpe if possible...

I have managed to get the brake pins freed off with some heat and gently working the bolts, it took a while but I've got there in the end... hopefully going to get it through the MOT shortly and we'll not be worried if the snow comes...

Glad you're out in the garage getting dirty :naughty

If your sump is OK it's likely that you just need a new gasket;

I'd personally not use a 2nd hand gasket, make sure when you fit it that you use a thin smear of engine oil around both sides before tightning back up and pay attention to the order you redo the bolts up, there's a method you use in the workshop manuals that tells you which ones to do, in which order and to what torque to tighten too. Failing to do it in the right order can knacker up your new gasket :doh

Get some emery cloth around those pins and get them smooth again, get either some copper grease or normal waterproof grease and some new boots on and they will be right as rain and pulling straight again in no time :naughty

I've just checked the workshop download and you're after EM (Engine Mechanical ) Pages 22 & 23, it does say use liquid gasket sealer too, noted for when I do mine if and when needed :thumb2

Yeah as Banshee a says the sump is liquid gasket.
Sounds like you're cracking on with it:thumb2
