Well it looks like the Octavia might just be going up for sale, packed in the other night with complete loss of compression, currently awaiting a garage maniac, sorry, mechanic, to have a look see. Fingers crossed it'll be something simple that's popped rather than a head gasket.

Either way, it's been getting a touch needy of late and the wife is losing patience and faith in it so there is serious discussions concerning a replacement new(ish) car.

One thing I hate about modern cars is the constant need to have the big rubber band changed every few years, originally Skoda said the Octy was every 60K miles but then revised it down to 40K or 4 years, now that comes round a bit too quickly for my wallets liking.

So, are there any medium sized cars that don't need regular wind up of their rubber bands? Either chain, geared or just a decent life rubber effort would be good! Can't persuade her to have a matching T2, so looking at 'normal' hatchbacks, five door and preferably decent sized boot. Thoughts?

Think the new peugeot diesels are 160k on the belt not that the rest of the engine will last that long:doh

i have a peugeot 406 03 plate 110 hdi which has 396000 on the clock original engine i swear buy them though the newer ones have so much electronics on them i had a peugeot 407 estate new in 2006 at 18000 it needed complete front suspension turbo blew at 37000 miles and it was a tiptronic auto that went in for 19 faults with gearbox in the 18 months i had it luckly all covered by warranty

Should have bought that C180K off me :lol
Unfortunately it's away tomorrow!

The turbo diesel Golf has always left me pretty impressed but still has a belt to change.
Not sure about diesel Volvo's but our 15yr old petrol one seems pretty well screwed together.

If you want me to check if a car is belt or chain just holler.

Saab 2.2 TID have a chain i have one there great on a run you can get 45 to 50 MPG and around 38 40 MPG around town + there very quick for a diesel.
Only reason i took mine off the road is the wife hates it [she doesn't like the seats too low].
