I have diving gear in the boot. I carry loads of club kit around - I sometimes have my kids in the back seats as well and towing a 750KG trailer.

Can I make do with a family car - I don't think so !!

For every criteria used to vilify 4x4s a good many (often the majority) of 4x4s don't feature in the 'worst'. The anti-4x4 brigade say that 4x4s are too heavy but they don't go after heavy cars - just 4x4s; that 4x4s are too thirsty but they don't go after gas guzzlers - just 4x4s; that 4x4s are too high but they don't go after tall cars - just 4x4s. It's the same with every excuse for their hatemongering - they conveniently forget that their criticism doesn't actually apply to many or most 4x4s. By all means campaign for better pedestrian impact safety - that would be a valid campaign. However, be aware that you'll take out rather a lot of non-4x4s before even getting half of Berry's Bigots' target. Similarly, it would be valid to campaign against gas guzzlers, but you'll take out a lot of non-4x4s before half of 4x4 models would be affected. Some even claim that 4x4s take up too much road space yet most people would be surprised how small a footprint the majority of 4x4s have. My own car (which is often referred to as a 'full-size' 4x4) fits seven seats into a footprint smaller than that of a Ford Focus Estate while the SWB version has a smaller footprint than a Ford Fiesta.

A 4x4 vehicle is simply a vehicle that has 4 wheels where all can be driven. There are 4x4 variants of all types of 4-wheeled vehicles. 4x4s range from lorries (like the Bedford TM) down to the like of the Fiat Panda 4x4. In amongst that lot are cars like the Subaru Legacy, Volvo S60, and many others you might not think of as 4x4s. Also, some cars that you might presume are 4x4s (e.g. Jeep Patriot 4x2 and Nissan X-Trail 2WD) are not and many that are 4x4s actually spend most of their time as 4x2s.

To go after a car purely on the basis of its transmission system while dressing up the campaign of hate with half-baked hype is just crazy. Despite the facts, the anti-4x4 brigade continue to have a go at the object of their obsessive hatred while completely ignoring non-4x4s that are at least as bad and often worse. They obstinately believe that 4x4s are worse than all other cars and are intolerant of those who own 4x4s; and hence are true bigots* and their campaign of social hatred should have no place in decent society.

How many doctors surgery's call on 4x4 owner/drivers to help out when the road net work grinds to a halt because of snow/ice.

I think we could be missing the point here, (Hold it, im not defending them) but they are aiming the hate at "Urban" 4x4's. You know the Rangerover 4.4 that only ever goes off road to park on the pavment to drop the kids at school. The old bloke that is so afraid of other road uses he need the biggest car to feel safe, then drives at 20 mph. The list goes on!
It points out that if you dont need one, dont get one. Its like me buying a 44ton artic unit just to use as a private vehicle, it would make no sence (However in this country i have the freedom to buy and drive what ever i wish) We use our 4x4's, thats why we have them, so in truth thier argument is not aimed at us.
Briggie has some great points on his post that flaws the Anti 4x4 peoples arguments from the start. Its not cos its a 4x4 they are moaning, its because its big and they dont like it. They would be happy if we all swapped to a Prias or Fiat 100's. What they fail to say is most 4x4's are diesel and around 2.5lt and can run on SVO, now when you flip the coin, all of your top end cars like BMW, Merc's and Jag's for example are petrol and start at 2.0lt and go up top 5lt in some case's, so it would make more sence to hate them! :naughty

Pedestrian safety - that's in the new laws for new cars anyway - hell I think it's Mercedes that have introduced airbags in the bonnet area to 'land' a pedestrian on to safely! All new cars have to have stuff like bendy plastic bumpers so that they don't break people's legs. However, while our trucks don't have any of this nice goodness to them, we are helping save the planet by keeping old vehicles going rather than buying new ones each year.

Emissions/Dino fuel consumption - yeah the Terrano is a tad thirsty but as has already been said, a lot of them run veg oil, and recycled waste veg at that and anyway, my 9 year old Skoda Octavia gets as good a MPG as a Prius and is a REAL car without loads of nasty batteries on board - the new Bluemotions and B class Mercs are getting 60-70mpg figures that a Prius can never achieve.

I often have all seven seats in use and I also use it to collect free wood for my 'eco friendly woodstove' that the average family car would break trying to carry.

So can the bean munching, sandal wearing, long haired beardy whingers shut up and get a bloody life! (No offence meant to members that eat beans/wear sandals/have long hair and or beards!)

I often tow 1300k (breaked) with a Berlingo van, and have half a ton in the back :nenau

I think the thing is here that we buy and drive what manufacturers make, as the pressure to get 'green' falls on manufacturers 4x4's will become greener and in time we will end up buying them when they reach our price range.

I think this anti 4x4 thing is short sighted to say the least!
