Rear diff oil

Hi i have ordered 3lts of comma 80w-90 GL5 LSD gear oil for my rear diff is this the correct stuff?

Sounds right to me, what are you paying, about £5.00 per litre is about right.:thumb2


Don't be shocked when it comes out all grey and thick, it gets contaminated with the friction material. This is normal after 20k + miles

Tip..
Slacken filler plug BEFORE the drain plug, just in case it won't budge.

I ordered 3 litres of this stuff when I replaced mine recently.

Apparently there are two types of diff: 1 takes 3 litres the other 1.5 I guess you will find out which one yours is when you do the job.

The stuff that came out of mine was new looking - I guess it must have been done just before I bought it.

When you are looking for a square socket to undo the plugs, use the end of a 1/2" socket extension, it's a good fit.

But look at it this way... It could have been replaced with standard (Non LSD) diff oil, so you putting the correct oil in has possibly saved yourself some hassle later.

Grey sound more like water contamination, check the breather pipes, I have seen two broke on the diff, Rick

No not water contamination, I know where mine has been all it's life.
It is the friction material that made mine grey.
When I re did mine again after 10 k miles, it was hardly discoloured.

Out board engine gear oil goes grey and milky when water gets in, but then they are submersed most of their life, with at least 3 seals to let water in.

I've only looked at the schematics, and there looks like a stack of friction discs each side, that resemble a pile of digestive biscuits.

They must work, as many of us have done over 150 k miles and never noticed any issues, but having said that... if that part actually fails or doesn't perform, how many of us would actually know? :nenau

Clearly jacking the rear axle up, we can see both wheels turn in the same direction, but how much torque does it take to make it start to slip?
Too much, then they are a pig on wet roundabouts taken at speed:doh
The back end really kicks out, changing the oil with new LSD oil really helps to prevent this.

Rick, Ryan's your man (96terrano) he loves taking things apart and photographing it as he goes.
I know he said he was in love with his new toy and wouldn't be on here so much, but I'm sure he can find time to strip a diff...if he has a spare laying around

Oh No..!
He'll be making a standard lamp out of that diff.:doh

For Ryan's sake, a standard lamp is a floor mounted light about 5 feet high, with a shade on the top.

I can just see in the corner of his lounge, a Terrano rear diff , balancing upright on a terrano wheel, with a lamp holder at the top, with a 1970's flowery lamp shade on top.:doh What an image...

The crown wheel removed and the diff hole fitted out with a small shelf for his beer or box of tissues... Depending what he is watching on the TV.:augie
