I think it depends on age, etc, but in my 1999 T2, the radio is linked to the ECU the first time it is switched on, and from then on, unless it is sent back for a factory reset, it will only work with the same ECU.
The other problem is, on most Nissan radios which are Blaupunkt and Clarion, the LCD display goes, which is why they tend to get changed for after market units.
