guys...the viscous fan attached to the water pump...should it ALWAYS be running? Im fairly sure that even after the engine is up to "normal" working temp, the fan still runs...from cold, i get the usual roar that dies down after a few hundred yards if that, but it still ticks away.:nenau

thats how it works think is turnning due to friction not sure but thats y it doent roar when warm:thumbs but roars when hot

Yes they do go faulty and drive the fan full time. However they do turn when at normal running temp but not powered as such, I think theres a little drag in the viscous unit at that point.

Or at least that was once said to me on here a long time ago.

ah yes, ok, not sure why i suddenly decided i should check on this as I know full well a viscous fan will run continuously!! But I started to wonder abotu the life of a fan, and as my truck has 127k mileson it, i wondered if A-it might affect MPG etc and B-should I replace it.

I wondered because im changing the belts at the weekend so will be in that general area!

oh i see, so if it was faulty, it would "roar" all the time?? as in how it sounds when starting from cold?

yes thats right but to change the fan u have to change the water pump as its 1 unit:thumbs

This is the speak of a man who's keeping his toy:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

I've seen people post on here with cracked fans, Rosco was the first to post but that was in the good old days. Also people do remove the Viscous Fan and replace with electrics, wasn't it Makeitfit that made a workshop download on this project.

This thread is amazing timing lol

I've changed my faulty waterpump with a woking one and thought that the truck sounded strange but it's actually how it's meant to sound

oh yeah I thought I had read something similar lol!!

ok, seems mine is probably ok then. I just wandered because i want to change the belts so at least now i know i can just remove them around the viscous.

I did both belts when I had them off to do the pump, mine were wedge shaped but the new ones I replaced with had teeth.

To slacken them off you'll need a 14mm spanner to loosen the nut for the alternator tensioner and then for the other belt on the left it's again a 14mm spanner on the power steering pump.

They are a bit•h to get back into position, I managed to get the alternator back to its correct position by threading a length of Paracord doubled through the nut hole and then getting my brother to pull on it hard while I checked the belt tension lol

dunno dude, dunno. I do still enjoy the tinkering, whih is why this weekend im taking the bumper off, both front wings and replacing the belts while I am in there. I want to make a template for both front wings so I can fix them, i also want to check my alternator vacuum pipes etc etc.

its one of those things where I feel i should do these few things, then if i decide to keep, great, if not, at least i will have tidied the front wings, and done the belts etc...

you never know...:thumbs

Clivvy, give me a bell when you are ready to remove bumper and wings as I want to see how it's done so that I can do ine too. Plus you may need a hand too.

christ that all took some reading!!

cant believe it was that thermostat!!:clap

Tell me about it!!!!!!!! So if you not getting any heat or you even feel your heaters deteriorating even slightly replace the stat for the sake of £10 and you could save yourself a stack of hassle that I had to go through

bumper is held on by just 4 17mm bolts 2 each side got from under wing below the rad but wheel side of chassis if that makes sense wing is 7 10mm bolts and u have to take out the plastic inner arch to get to 1 bolt near the bottom door hinge hope that helps:thumbs

see oval hole in inner wing near rad thats the area where 2 bolts r for the bumper then just do the other side same place and bumper should just pull off

ah cheers Geoff that really helps :thumbs

looking forward to it now...

Yep give me a shout Clivvy and I'll come along even if it's just to take the wee wee:lol
