Just won aset on good old flebay
Silly question time...
are the fixing holes already there or will I have to drill them?

Paul

I am sure the fixing point are all ready drilled but someone will be able to set this in stone for you  my side steps fittings are a bit like an exhaust clamp fitting

There are std pre-drilled and tapped holes in the chassis rails, not sure of size, M10 or M12, will check tomorrow, might be a funny pitch like the wheel bolts. Assuming of course that the steps you've bought are using these as I don't recognise the exhaust clamp idea that sweety mentions.

Alison's complaining about mine, mind you I lifted it, put bigger tyres on and then removed the side steps so it is a tad difficult to get it. Rock sliders with built in tree sliders to act as steps are on the list of mods to do.

Going to put a rope ladder on the side of ours till they come..(Christine's SOO going to kill me when she sees this!!)

I had'nt seen a fitting like this before either hummingbird until I got my T2   It's a squared off type of U bolt that goes around the chassis rail & the step mounting bolt onto it on the outer side of the chassis rail  The steps I have are like the cheepest ones formula 4x4 do the alloy running boards I think they are called. The only prob i've had is the fixing from the boards to the mountings gave up whilest standing on them, so ended up surfing   I refastened then with a nut & bolt  But if they go again i'm going to replace the boards with some alloy tubing to make them into rock sliders

My Nissan tubular bars had the same oversized squared off U bolt to go around the chassis rails.

Neil, be aware that most side steps, even tubular, are not sufficiently strong enough to be classed as rock sliders, in part because the mountings are not strong enough.

I've removed my side steps as they were a bit of a liability off road, plus wife & kid don't have too many problems getting in, but I'm only running standard tyres & suspension at the moment.

Yes I see what you mean Jonathan, I never use the steps as my legs are long enough but my wife has to because of her back & she's got little legs

I've had a look and my 95N SWB has 3 sets of three holes. The holes are set in a diagonal line, the top left and bottom right are tapped M10 and the centre hole was for a hook on the mounting plate of the side steps, this hooked into the chassis rail supporting the weight of the steps whilst the bolts were put in (or in my case taken out) for ease of fitment, makes it a one man job with no need for any supports etc under the steps.

As Jonathan says, side steps are no use as rock sliders and neither would a bit of ally tubing be much good for long either, they're usually made for 2.5-3mm wall thickness steel tube.

Thanx hummingbird,
They should be here in afew days, now I know what to look for.
Paul

Well looking like I've been ripped off! 8O
No side steps & they won't answer my emails, Fleebay/Paypal won't do anything till after tomorrow just hope we get our money back. -banghead-

Big thanks to hummingbird for telling us the size of the bolts for the steps!
Came yesterday and fitted them today.
