The power steering on my 96 td is playing up . will be fine then stops working. fluid level ok, belt tight and ok.its a nightmare when parking or pulling out with no p s any ieas please.

could it be the pipes? on some vehicles the flexible hoses can collapse inside :nenau

It could still be the belt, With the engine off, see if you can rotate the pulley by hand to check that the belt isn't slipping.

If I wet the Power steering belt during washing, the power steering isn't that good until the belt is dry.
You might just need a new belt, but replace both while you are at it. Cheap enough from milners, keep the old ones in the car as spares.
Other than that, as said before it could be the pump.
 
Ok cheers will try belt first ,pipes then pump.
 
Pumps usually go and thats that, if it is intermittent, think it is more likely the box, valves playing about, used boxes are readily available, Rick
