Just been away, with the caravan and we started having issues going up hills, we have the 2.7 tdi reg:w 2000, the problem is it does not kick down, so revs just start to drop, my friend is a mechanic and told me to change the fuel filter which I've done made a slight improvement on coming home would stay at 3000 rev doing about 40mph, there are no engine management lights to say we have an issue? The other think I,ve noticed is the sport switch goes red when you turn the key and then goes out?

Hmmm may be auto transmission oil that needs replacing. Rick might be able to advise on that one. Supposed to smell sweet and a nice red colour, but it smells burnt and is discoloured when it needs changing. Sorry no idea how to check it on a Terrano tho.
Another thing to check is the banjo bolt or mini filter. There's a couple of threads over the last week about these parts.

Is it doing this without the caravan as well, like Jim said, it could be an auto issue.
If changing the fuel filter helped, you may want to check the banjo filter too as this can block up and give problems.

slow up hills

My Mistral is an auto as the only criticism I have is that it is gutless going up hill.
If I lose momentum or the gearbox kicks down - which results in more noise but no extra speed or power, the truck will drop down to 40mph and will only increase in speed slowly.

nothing wrong with the fluid or gearbox, just a quirk of the motor.

This is the same towing or solo, the temperature also rises slightly (less than half way) due to the extra engine load but goes down quickly

Hi, thanks for your replies, this only happens with the caravan, when solo the car goes up any hill with know issue?

uphill struggle

Hi the TDI has a bit more BHP than the TD.

The "uphill struggle" aggravates the life out of me

Same when towing mine but I guess my caravan is somewhere near the upper limit of 1900kg! How much does yours weigh?

Hi my caravan is 1400kg

Check the oil level first when warm. If it's low it may affect the gear changes.
Changing the oil is straight forward enough so I'd start with that. Get it warm and drain as much as possible, then measure and refill with the same amount. Only got 4ltrs out of mine so did it again the next week.
Haven't used the sports switch and as it's hidden behind the steering wheel don't know if it lights up momentarily.
1400kg shouldn't give too much trouble though.

Yeah I would second that, change of the fluid (if you don't have the history) can make wondered :thumb2
