Hi Guys,

when looking over some issues on the car today, I noticed that the I/C seems to be leaking - I can see little drips of oil coming out the two corners at the back...is this anything to worry about, what are the affects of a leaky I/C??

Can it be repaired?

also, I cleaned it out ages ago, but its still a bit oily in there - a misty film throughout - anything to worry about? anything I can check?

Dint know inter cooler had any oil. Thought it just cooled the air going into the fuel system.

sorry, I think what I mean is there might be some damage to the I/C so the small amount of oil inside is being forced out...I think...

I've got a good I/C here Clive cheap as a cheap thing to you butt :D
There seemed to be loads of leaky I/Cs a few years back so maybe you've got one

awesome, what are the effects of a leaky I/c??

I presume air pressure is lower or something?!?

all turbo' pass a little oil, and if there is a pinhole in the IC it will show, but such a small leak will have no detrimental effect on performance, if the leak is such that you can feel air coming out then yes it will have an effect, Rick

righto, can I check for an air leak with the engine running perhaps, or must it be pressure tested?

Oil leaking is messy, air leaking is potentially power loosing, but only if lots, a hole that you could insert a pin is insignificant, a pen sized hole is significant 8mm, and you will feel and hear the air from this, Rick

Are you sure the oil isn't being thrown up from the top of the engin under the intercooler and dripping off?

not 100% sure, but it does look to be coming out from each corner, its quite watery, rather than thick gooey oil so I assumed oil being forced out...

cheers Rick, if that's the case then ok for now, though I think ill buy MakeItFits as I trust it will be top notch!

Oil from the engine breather system often gets sucked into the induction system when the valve in the oil trap becomes a bit faulty

righto, I will whip it off again when I do the I/C work and give it a proper cleaning...:thumbs

The best way to find out if the valve is letting oil past into the induction system is to take off the pipe going to the turbo from the oil filter & check inside it for oil which you will prob see on the inside of the turbo aswell. Had this on my last T2 & at first thought the turbo had went until I noticed the oil so fitted an oil catch tank which kindly dropped oil on my inner wing from the breather filter well it stopped the inner wing rusting:lol:lol used to give it a wipe every month as that's all that was needed

one thing I did notice, when I gave the engine a clean (to help trace leaks) was a splatter/misting of oil on the turbo heat shield under the I/C, directly behind the oil valve thing...? either its from the oil valve thing, or the I/c...

The valve on my last T2 was leaking where it bolts onto the alloy mount so pulled it off & found there was an O ring fitted which had prob stretched due to age & was causing the leak so as a temp fix I wrapped some PTFE tape around the O ring & it stopped the leak:thumbs I then forgot all about getting a new O ring but 3 years later it was still bone dry

great idea, I will do that regardless!:thumbs
