possible gearbox / transfer problem

hi all just bought another maverick 2.7 swb only got 79000 on payed 525 well pleased anyway,here what happens wineing noise so i put it into 4 wheel drive hi then back into 2 wheel drive hi reverse back then seems to be ok, someone told me that the gearbox or transfer box get wound up never herd of this once you do the above its fine are we talking new box or transfer box cheers
