Discovered some rust bubbles on the front wing today just above the plastic wheel arch trim. 98 Maverick GLS SWB 2.4petrol.

Had some difficulty getting the trim off and snapped a couple of the plastic securing pins that hold the trim to the wing. Anyone know exactly how these should be removed (I just pulled the trim until it popped free) THe rust isn't too bad but seems to be centred around the the fixing pins - hopefully I've just caught it in time.

Just wondered if anyone had had the same problem with rust and any suggestions as how best to stop it spreading would be appreciated and if anyone knows where I can get replacements pins that would be great.

RUST

I too have recently discovered the old curse rust on my sills and around wheel arches mate.
I think the only cure to be sure it stops is to cut it off and replace with a new piece of steel (welding).
So far I have pulled bits of it off, steel brushed and sprayed with these water proofing sprays etc but I doubt very much this will stop the blasted stuff. :x
As for the plastic pins ? I have left mine off and where I'm able to I've replaced with nuts & bolts and/or screws. You can buy all kinds of plastic clips pins etc from Halfords and the like. I've got abit of a selection stacking up since Buying my trol over four years ago.
  -banghead-

Geordie - if you can post a picture of the clip I can probably source some for you if you want some (I do I don't know how many different clips). Yours has got different arches on to mine so I can't look at mine (they're falling off anyway due to the rust.

I'm planning on cutting the arches right back and fitting some extensions - that should sort the rust - at least for a while.

Hummingbird & Dadba,

Thanks fellas - have put the trim back on for the time being. Will probably have another go next week -weather permitting - and will get a photo of the pin then. Will also check the other wings whilst I'm at it..

This is the first sign of rust I've seen and it doesn't seem to advanced so I need to try and stop it spreading if possible. The rusted area is underneath the plastic trim so I'll probably just clean it up and Hammerite it.

Thanks again.

Geordie.
