Hi all, well had a reasonable day out at the Wood, recovered a few stuck guys and winched myself out a few times as well, but this one went well wrong

Not quite sure what happened, but motor suddenly went freely back down the hill and luckily front wheels went on lock so jammed between two trees after only a few feet, HB is a transmission brake and it was not in rear diff lock, because it was so sudden I think that as I was in 4 wheel the front Lokka decided to unlock, (I did hear a click as it started to move) and as the rear lock was off virtually no HB in operation

I have to say that I had considered stopping the engine and putting it in gear but after the heavy winching I looked at the volt meter and decided to leave it running to keep the battery up, I did fortunately also close the drivers door while I was sorting straps etc, anyway recovered again but had to put a block on the tree to the right to save ripping the mirror right off, two lessons learnt, on a steep uneven hill put the rear dif lock on and keep some recovery stuff in passenger foot well as on this occasion could not open the rear doors, but a good day had anyway, Rick

Sounds like you had a lucky escape there Rick but you seem very calm about it or is it the scotch working it’s magic :thumbs

Not embalmed much of that yet, no when it happened I just stood back and watched it go knowing there is absolutely nothing I could do, just hopped out of the way of the winch rope as at first I could see it going all the way down, but as said the front wheels cought in the ruts and sent it sideways down the track so tree on rear doors and tree demolishing drivers mirror and dent in wing, but yes could have been much worse, decided I do not like transmission HB, in future possibly bigger alternator and stop engine and put in gear, Rick

I have watched it several times on the dash cam vid and yes could have been much worse, Rick

Having watched the dash cam many times have been able to work out what happened, so stopped on steep hill in 4 wheel drive low box but no rear diff lock on, HB on transmission and held no problem, did consider stopping engine and putting in gear but battery a bit low after the heavy winching, so did not, all held well till I came back to get something and got in drivers seat and picked up a few items that had come of the dash due to the steep up hill angle got back out and shut the door (just as well or I would have lost it) but heard a click on the dash cam, can only assume this was the start of the front Lokka disengaging then a little latter when I just lent gently on the NSF wing heard another click (also on the dash cam footage) this was when it just let go, one rear wheel was only in light contact with the ground so it was the one front wheel via the Lokka that was holding it, which then let go, so basically the HB held cos of 4 wheel and the Lokka, had I engaged the rear diff lock it would not have happened, so lesson learnt, flick the rear diff lock on when HB on steep and rough ground, Rick
