I`m having an intermittent problem with my patrol 2.8. When I start the engine it revs to about 1100 and then dies the engine management light comes on. Release the accelerator pedal and the light goes off. This could go on all day. If i then leave the truck for a few hours it could work just fine. Had it towed to the garage the other day and the mechanic drove it off the truck and it was fine, diagnostic computer didn`t show any problems. Have had a new maf and an air filter. Any ideas greatly appreciated

How about the fuel filter has it been changed recently??
What about a air leak in they fuel system ??

Jamie

Silly place to start but often the best; you aren't putting your foot on the accelerator when you start it are you? If not, how long after startup does this occur?

I drained the fuel filter today and pumped the primer for a while and she`s going fine at the mo. I`m going in to get a new fuel filter in the afternoon anyone got the procedure for replacing it? When the engine is cold or has been lying up for a while I do press the accelarator whilst turning the ignition. The problem can happen anytime hot or cold. I`m starting to think its the filter, dirt maybe. Thanks

1st of if the MIL light was on the fault is stored
diagnostic computer didn`t show any problems.

So was it Nissan that plugged into it?
If it was they should be able to tell you the fault and how many start ago it happened.

I had a throttle position fault intermittant on mine and they told me how many starts ago when it 1st happened, good clean and it never happened again:clap

:)

Just an update, replaced the fuel filter today, it was filthy. took it for a spin and it seems fine went really well so fingers crossed, going for a good drive tomorrow (200 mls) so that will tell a lot! Better bring my AA card! As regards Nissan, I have the pleasure of living in a country commonly know as the ripoff republic of ireland, Nissan and all the other main dealers have no interest in dealing with me and my old car that they didn`t sell to me in the first place. they would prefer if my car was scrapped and they could rip me off on something new. As a result they have no interest in helping and if they did they would charge me an arm and leg and maybe my bollocks as well! (€997 for a Maf for instance). I was just thinking this morning, I spent a Tenner to join this site and with out any mechanical knowledge have probably saved myself a couple of grand. I`m just sorry I don`t have the knowledge to help other members here. Many Thanks again. Let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Donal, you only need to get them to plug it in and check you don't need to get them to do the job, only pay for the check which is about £35 with todays exchange rate.

I find it hard to believe what your saying about dealers not wanting to fix your car only sell you a new one.

As were all in the EU its illegal for them not to check it out:eek: and you don't need to take any car to the dealer for service etc from where you got it.

What I was saying about the fault being stored is correct, so if it goes again.

Glad you've got it sorted, but sometimes you do need to get it checked out by the people with the correct equipment. Your still not 100% its sorted and it will always be in the back of your mind.:nenau

Did you have to pay for the check that found nothing wrong??????

I don't like going to main dealers, but sometimes you've got to bite the bullet.

Keep us informed:thumbs

It`s really the attitude you get when you go to these main dealers, They don`t want to know about the guy trying to keep an older car on the road at minimal cost, where the car is as much a hobby as a form of transport. There is few independent mechanics who would have an interest in a vechicle like a patrol but would not have the experience of them. On both occasions when I got the car to the nissan garage the engine management light was not on ( as i said it`s an intermittent problem) they told me that the computer wasn`t showing any problem. You would think they might say " it could be such a thing or we`lll try this or we had one before that done this etc" But no. As I say it`s about maximum profit minimal effort. The UK is probably different but here in Ireland these garages have been spoiled during the boom years and customer service is way down the list of priorities. Any way enough moaning from me, here`s the good news. Changed the fuel filter yesterday and went on a 200 mile round trip today, she didn`t miss a beat. It really is a nice car when it`s going well. So fingers crossed and thanks again

I understand what your saying about their attitude and it stinks:eek:

But they a talking utter pish about it not showing a fault:banghead

On the Patrol once that MIL light has been on the fault is in memory in the consult unit. As I said about mine, the fly by wire throttle was throwing a fault (intermittant) and they told me how many starts ago it 1st happened.

If one of your key fobs stops working on these things you need to get every fob reprogrammed:doh

Glad you got it sorted:D and make sure you change the fuel filter when it should get changed;)

:D
