can any one tell me if the old satnavs can have their system changed from say navman to multimaps ?

as i haved an old icn 610 sat in a draw as it kept taking me down farmer lanes for some reason also the maps are really old on it so it will take me down the wrong way of a one way lane or down dead ends etc due to the new roads

so instead of binning it thought i might as well make use of it

i have a old tom tom one that wont read sd cards , rendering it useless as the maps are on cards ...... if anyone wants it ?

pete have you tried to update or rewrite the firmware on it as that could be a simple fixable fault ?

pete try this

Do you have access to a card reader/writer on you PC? You have to be able to plug the card in somewhere other than into the TomTom. That's your first priority.

If you can use a card reader/writer, attach your TomTom to your PC via the USB cable and say "YES" when it asks if you want to connect. At that point, your PC operating system will see the TomTom as a USB drive that can be accessed for reads and writes. Simply copy all of the files on your TomTom to the new card.

If you get a message that the SD card needs to be formatted, you must be careful to ONLY format it as "FAT" or "FAT16". If you use any other format, the card will not be recognized by the TomTom operating system.

Once the copy is complete, you should be able to insert the card and install whatever map you choose. Remember that since you only have a 1GB card, you will have to REMOVE THE EXISTING MAP FIRST, or you won't have enough room on the card. Typically, a 2GB SD card is preferred. Also, note that your TomTom cannot use an SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card of any size. The TomTom operating system will not allow it.

to be honest mate i use and prefer sheilas garmin , the tom tom is stuck in a drawer , dunno where the card is , it might still be inside , cant be arsed with it

i use an old navman (mio 168) and it works perfectly well with multi map, give it a go - i had to mess about with it to get it working but it works now

I have a garnin Nuvi, it has an SD slot , the map is out of date but Garmin want to charge more than the price of a new sat nav to upgrade/update it it.
Is there a better (cheaper) way?

I've been thinking the same about my TomTom 1 (original), it still works ok and far too good to chuck away.

I have a Garmin Nuvi which I have had for around 4 years - this does have an SD card slot. When the maps needed updating (I use it in the UK, Spain & France) I bought Numaps Europe, covers the whole of Europe, UK & NI, cost £99 (ouch) but it gives me up to 4 updates a year automatically i.e. I get a message on my pc to tell me new maps are available, I download them to a 2gb card in the satnav - job done. This lasts for the lifetime of the satnav, so no other payment for as long as I have it. The system works well, the updates come through regular as clockwork and so far (I've been using this for about 2 years now) it appears to be good value for money.

I'm sorry but I cannot find the disc the guy sent us or his details. The navman doesnt give any clues and just boots straight into tomtom :(

I will continue looking for the info
