old chains required!

I have no idea if its the right forum for this or not but it has worked before so maybe it will again :wink:

Does anyone have any decent lenghts of fairly heavy chains knocking around they no longer need? I am looking for some to lock up trailer tractor mower, field gates, etc. to help keep sticky fingers at bay!

i had a very heavy duty chain roun a container through piece pipe welded to it with padlock inside large diameter pipe another chain went though chasis on 16ft ifor they use a shark saw to cut chains,pipe,padlock shackle to empty container they also took neighbours horse box police adviced us on phone they would keep an eye out for big blue horsebox and they were very sorry for our loss! isued us with crime numbers over phone sent us a letter saying they would do everything possible to find our stuff that was about six mths ago so far no joy!
just dont leave nothing in sight keep gates locked when your there even as we get them driving in asking to buy bale straw or is the horse/goat/pig/dog/chicken/egg/peacock/goose/dog for sale err no is there a sign on gate that says there is then mate? no well go fourth and multiply then! get orf my land in proper farmer palmer style!

i,ll keep an eye out for any but we use it for exactly the same thing. we've just bought a 30ft steel container to keep a lot of our kit in as well.

cheers for the advice jace it is pretty much what we do allready, funy but loads of people say no point locking stuff it will get nicked anyway but you have to make the effort dont you!

we had one last week climbed gate asking if something was for sale, but there was nothing there for him to see then, so i am planning on adding barbed wire over field gate to deter casual climbing over for such silly enquiries!

we also have a shipping container with plenty of locks but we have left a deliberate gap in the hedge to make the doors more visible from nearby houses to try and deter theives as they would have no privacy to get up to not good!

you can but try ! boat yards another good source sometimes use chain as ballast usally have lifting gear aswell so maybe old bit kicking about!

small independent plant hire companies often have "condemned" lifting chains laying about, its just getting them at the right price 8O

eeeeerrrrrrrrmmmmmmm plank I know you are not really tight fisted :lol: mate but in Tesco they do a heavy duty motorcycle chain and padlock £11.97 brand spankin new :lol:

The new lock and chain idea is a 'good-un' but i could really use some longer lengths of chain!

rough guess plank but I think the chain maybe about a metre in length and each link is about 6 or 7mm thick,

Most B&Q stores sell quite heavy chain its all on a roll and you can cut to whatever length you need.Might be worth a look.

cheers for the advice steve but i think you have hit the nail on the head 'you can cut it to length' we have two lengths of old lifting chain already and to cut that we had to resort to the 9 inch grinder! I have a pair of record 4ft bolt croppers and even with two of us using them we only managed to dent the blades!

I think lifting chains must be hardened :wink: there only down side is very close links so you can only put a lock at the very end link!
