I have an oil leak that is gradualy getting worse.
Its coming from between the engine and bell housing making me think its the crank seal behind the flywheel?. or at least my mate diagnosed that.

the question is do I just keep toping the oil up or dig deep?
if I tackle the problem its either take the engine outand fix any other leaks too and then of course you might as well do the clutch plates while at it.

the other problem is my long suffering rattly gearbox one of the bearings is knackerd (not sure which) stops rattling on pressing the clutch.
I don't want to go spending a fortune doing the seals for the box to pack up.
any suggestions on what to do?
if we take the box out it means all the torsion bars off and everything else.
we can do the seal like that and the clutch but I don't want the expence of a gearbox overhaul. and of course a second hand one may be as bad or worse.
does anyone have a link for the crank seals for a 2.7 td?
to be honest its the first time in a good while I have got a few quid and I was hoping to keep it for days off work due to bad weather in the coming winter but this is our only car and has to be in good order.

Check the leak is not your rocker cover gasket.
Reach behind engine just below the rocker cover, wipe away the oil.
Check it after a run, if there is oil there Bobs yer aunties old man:clap

Worked for me, 10mm spanner tighten rocker cover bolts job done.

I doubt it is the crank seal, as kitchenman says rocker cover is first choice, then turbo oil pipes, I would give it a good jet wash off first and then check it out, Rick

Oh and do not worry about rattly box till it breaks, mine rattles and whines but been doing that for more than two years and I tow a lot too, Rick

check the blowby control valve aswell, its a bugger for leaking and the oil spreads everywhere from it

my thoughts exactly.
just watchin a few jet washers on ebay as mine blew up.
personaly im no mechanic and thought it was gearbox oil as its right on the housing. but it is engine oil.
I have been knocking the truck about a bit lately and have noticed one or two things need tightening up.
so its a jet wash and a good look around for myself. I will be moving a few things about like the air filter box and battery just to get a better look at things.and give everything a pinch up.
I will try and take a few pictures of suspect areas.

had a look for the leak today.and I think its the sump?
Ive checked the rocker etc.

there is a small amount of oil on the side of the engine but I don't think its causing the amount of oil at the bottom

Check the oil cooler, it doesn't look much like what you would expect a cooler to llok like. Look straight through the inner wing rubber cover. There is what looks like a metal plate on side of block. The dip stick bracket uses one of the cooler bolts to hold it on. When some dope replaced my starter he removed the dip stick tube and forgot to put the bolt back so mine leaked oil and coolant.

Also check around the turbo there is an aluminium union there somewhere cant remember exactly where that splits you would never know and even when its removed its hard to spot seen several like that (symptoms of this is that it appears the oil filter is leaking as the union is just above it) The other favorite is sump be very care full ive had them before just touch it with screwdriver and oil pours out.

Ive had a good look around the oil filter and all that area is clean.
I have had the torch around the other side and the oil cooler too.
if it turns out to be the sump it looks a bugger of a job. can it be done with the engine in situ?
