Hi all,

Just taken the air inlet tube of the turbo(big pipe from air filter box to turbo) and there is quite a lot of oil in front of the compressor wheel.Oil is also in the breather tubes.

The compressor wheel looks ok, no end play, no damage.

Any thoughts on the oil ?

If there is an oil leak into the turbo and it gets bad enough the engine will use the oil as fuel and rev it's self to bits. I've been told by a friend who had this happen that you have to drop the clutch whilst in a high gear to stall the engine as turning the key off wont stop the engine once this starts.

I've had that happen twice - don't know about "dropping the clutch", I just brought it up gently in 5th with the brakes hard on.

Hi Jim,

It doesn't seem to use a lot of oil. Just looked on some old forum questions and it may be a breather tube from the crankcase. Will have a look tommorow and let you know.

Steve.

Sounds a bit like how mine was & I tracked the fault down the the factory oil trap, so I fitted an oil catch tank & I stoped using oil

Could someone please tell me weather the waste gate on a turbo should be closed or open when engine switched off. And also is the gate open or closed when actuator rod is fully retracted.?

just looked on old forum site and have the answer. My waste gate is closed all the time. The actuator rod is not moveing, is it poss to replace the actuator or is it time for a new turbo?

The actuator rods take some moving & often you have to use a pair of pliers to move it  What sort of mileage has your T2 covered :?: TBH I would check your crankcase breather system 1st to see if it's this at fault, if you take off the breather pipe that go's into the induction before the turbo & put the end into a plastic pop bottle for a few days you will see if oil is comming out it for def & if this is the case then I would say the factory oil catch tank has had it like mine

The wastegate should only be open wen you are producing more than a pre-determined max boost, below that pressure ie at idle or with engine off it should be closed. It is nigh on impossible to create any meaningful boost just by revving the engine, ut needs to be under load so you will alomost never see the wastegate operating.

Sorted.

It was the breather system.Removed the pipe from rocker cover and the car runs a treat.

Can't believe such a thing can make that much difference to the running of an engine.

tryed the pipe thats connected to the induction before the turbo and it made no difference i still don't fully understand it all but am pleased not to have replaced the turbo as nissan france suggested.

Thanks to all who helped me again..
