Had this one sent to me today, Any thoughts on this one please.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few day’s ago I either heard or read of the fact that if you use a non manufacturers part, in this instance an engine oil filter, it is possible to damage the engine somehow. This to me seems a little far fetched but thought I would change mine to a genuine filter. This is where my problems started. After ringing two of my nearest Ford agents and being told firstly, cannot help at all, they don’t do these items any more, secondly, I would have to go and pay for the item and then HOPFULLY they MIGHT be able to ‘lay their hands on one probably’
Can you help in obtaining an engine oil filter please, and would the 1993 Terrano fit do you know? The reason I am changing this long before my service is due is because if this rumour, plus the fact I am wondering if there is any substance to the rumour because my timing chain rattles when starting from cold and I wondered if there is perhaps a delay in the flow of oil while using a non Ford filter.

I can get the 93’ Terrano filter from a firm Warwickshire at £2.70 each + VAT and postage, I suppose these would be the same as a Ford wouldn’t they?

jap 4x4 spares in hatton ?
ive never heard of aftermarket filters not being up to standard esp. if u use something reputable ! only way i could see a problem is if u had warranty of nissan!

I've come across manufacturers down grading the spec of filters so can't see why pattern parts should be any worse.

A few years back ford deleted the non return valve in the oil filter to fit the kent crossflow engine. What the actually did was stop making them and label up one that they were still making without the non return valve as the C102 (IIRC that is the code).

remember me dads ol lada they reckoned there oem filters had non return valves an aftermarket iones didnt

as i recall many of my mates swear by manufactures own filters due too the non return valve not being in alot of after market ones, there reason behind this is due too the oil pressure taking longer too build up from start and the lack of lubricant for the first 10 secs or so, if you look at the wear over several years it can be a justifiable purchase.

i remember reading something at a time about some filters actually having a bypass valve cant remember if it was for when pressure hi or low but it could stick in open postion so oil wouldnt get filtered..

cant see too many aftermarket folks going to hassle of adding 1 when trying to make it cheaper

thats oil pump incase bad servicing at least some oil dirty or not gets round engine

Just on "what the ford dealer said"

They did the same thing with the ford explorer. My mate had one and the dealer could "only try to get parts" if he put money down first. Basically they dont manufacture the parts and have to buy them in.

If in doubt give Nissan a shout. I have always bought non gen stuff never had a problem although its good to have a ring round as Ive found on some items the main dealer is cheaper!!!!!! 8O

Never heard of that with non gen filters, I was always taught they were poor quality compared to genuine but I was being brain washed by nissan at the time

Is it the timing chain or the usual culprit tappets :?:

We put o.e. oil filters on our toyota because of the bypass valve, but then again they are only £4.50 from them.

I recently bought the filter kit from Milners, not yet fitted, was going to do it this weekend. Should I still go ahead and do it or go for the genuine Nissan filters. Don't fancy another huge outlay, just because of a few quid!

Cars, is there ver anything straight forward :?

Mines had after market fitted for several years without any problems. Same goes for most of my previous cars as well.

i did find in one trade mags a batch of dodgy filters maybe this has come from, most after market filters good quality blue thumbprint one seem good used em on all my jap 4x4s without issue!

oil filter.

Mav. the ford one you want is Finis code 1112650. Motorcraft No EFL900.

this is the same oil filter used up to the end of the run on the MK2 mav 2.4 Efi. Fords still stock them. Main dealer price is £7.61. Cant understand why your dealer said he cant get them, True, they dont hold them in the dealers as they are a low use item. but they can get them. i have never had any trouble getting bits for mine and i always go to main dealer.

As for your rattly chain i could be a worn chain guide...just a thought

Thank you Toolmaker,

I will pass this on to the member that asked the question, But this is also for me to as i am running a petrol too.

Regards,

Mav.
