Just when we could do without vehicular problems the Jeep has started to make a horrible sound from the engine when idling as a cold engine.

The noise has been a bit intermittent it goes when the engine is up to temperature. Sounds a bit like a single very noisy tappet with another strange noise that comes and goes. Seems okay when the engine is hot.

I have posted on a Jeep website I do not know if these 5 cylinder units have manual or hydraulic tappets. It has been like this for about three days the wife informs me.

It's only done 108k so hope it's not beyond an economic fix.

Some sort of super flush plus

Visited my local garage they have suggested they use a couple of flushing additives and then an oil & filter change afterwards rather than go straight for replacing the hydraulic valve lifters.

What oil do you use? My dad swears by mobil1, he used to have an astra that got noisy tappets which were terrible when cold, took about half a mile till they quietened down. Started using mobil1 one and everything was quiet from the first turn if the key!!

I use the genuine MB specification low ash oil that is recommended by Jeep & for the same engine in the old 2.7 CRD ML's.

Engine Noise Update 2.7 CRD Grand Cherokee

Jeep went into local Garage yesterday turns out the noise is due to two leaking injectors quite a common issue with some MB designed engines as I already knew.

The injectors do not screw in but are held in place by a collapsible sealing washer with a spring clamp held down with a one time use stretch bolt.

The garage have soaked the injectors overnight in the hope that they will come out with not too much trouble. Worst case scenario is they will have to weld a bolt onto the stuck injectors and pull them with a slide hammer & fit a couple of new injectors.

I await the dreaded phone call update !

Good News Today !

But we both wanted wanted a Nissan Patrol just ended up with a Jeep due to financial constraints plus not prepared to buy a Patrol with Starship Mileage within our £5k budget.

Great News today the injectors have come out without damage, both are in good condition just needs new seals & stretch bolts should pick her up later today!

Given advice by garage to listen out for the leaking injector noise if it happens again as they are much easier to get out if they have not been leaking too long.

The Jeep website "Birty Dastards" gave me the correct diagnosis once again. It is as they describe it a Chuff Chuff noise when the engine is cold.

Not an excessive charge from a local garage.

We collected the Jeep today it has never sounded so sweet.
Work done as follows.

1) Engine flush with new oil & filter afterwards.
2) Two leaking seized Injectors removed by visiting specialists Borrowash Diesel Services.
3)Injectors removed without damage, cleaned and re-fitted with new stretch bolts & seals.
4)Fitted pair of rear ARB clamp bushes.(Parts supplied by me)
