Best bets get out there and do it with someone who knows the score :thumb2
You'll pick up tips like how to tackle rutts and bumps.
For example I can recall us straddling a great big rutt only to find it getting wider later on :lol:lol:lol
They let us do that , it was on the training ground but if you were up on the hills nice to have someone to tip you off or show the way in advance :thumb2

my advice - don't go at it like a 'pig at a spud'
take your time, walk tricky bits first, and 'if in doubt - don't!'
bear in mind i am usualy out on my own!
there is no shame in aviding a lane that looks too boggy, it save you getting in a mess, and saves the environment :thumb2

well i think i learnt the most from going round a training course.
langdale in north yorks was superb, before it shut, cant think
of many lanes done since that were tougher than some of sections
there. was on my own, well with the mrs, though there were staff
around if really confused or stuck. actually some of the hill tracks
were quite nerve racking at first, but i applied knowledge i'd read
up on from 4x4 technique books to years of articles from the 4x4
press describing laning trips.
dont be affraid to ask, as a working knowledge of the 4x4 bits
under your truck is the most important thing and after that go
out in small groups on routes chosen to suit all vehicles in the
convoy.

best piece of advice is to never go out alone especially places that are new
research a lane or set of lanes before you attempt them,they may not be the same as the last time you went out on them
also always make sure you dont choose lanes that you may different tyres to what you have
good way to start is go on one of the land rover experience days they are very good

This video isnt really much of a scientific experiment but it does demonstrate on mud (ie not too far off green laning type surfaces) that coming in at the right angle and a gentle right foot can reap benefits.
ie avoid the bull in a china shop or "pig at a spud"
notable that theyre both on road tyres, the wj's described as bald :thumb2
