Noisy Lift Pump

The previous owner spent a lot of money trying unsuccessfully to cure the problems caused by the banjo filter (that he missed). I believe one attempt was a new electric lift pump which I think is what the photo shows, but I'm no mechanic so I may be mistaken. Its mounted on the n/s near the washer bottle and wiper motor.

Anyways, turn the key and the pump makes a fast rat tat tat sound, the engine fires up straight away but the pump continues with it's noise. My question is, Should the pump stop when the fuel is up, if not any suggestions other than turning the radio up on how to quieten the noise.
I did disconnect the wires as an experiment and the engine started and ran ok but I only did that for a few seconds before reconnecting, next day it was a sod to start so may have taken in air, it's ok now after a 300 mile trip
