Got a noise on the back end, so I took the wife home and went back down the road, ho no wasn't her I still had the noise. It comes in about 40-45 and stays there, sounds to me like the diff or a rear wheel bearing, but how do I tell which one.

to check bearing jack it up and give the wheel a wobble, dunno about how to test the dif tho

if not the bearing, will be dif or axel

check bushes as well.

If you haven't, change the LSD oil immediately. Worst case if you have the older LSD it will use 2.8 litres at about £6/litre.

Go here and put in your vehicle and postcode and it will tell you where to get it.

Remember:

1. Make sure you can undo the filler BEFORE you drain the oil.

2. ONLY use LSD oil.....nothing else will do, period.

I just bought 3 litres of Comma LSD oil, £4.99 a litre, off the shelf, still got to change it, waiting to drain the oil after a run.
I got this from Roadrunner, Hednesford near Cannock WS12 4AU 01543 871886

...and having done the LSD oil, if the noise is still there, jack up the rear and rock the wheels to see if theres any movement.

Same thing works on the front but only vertically obviously.

I mean I've said this a million times but LSD oil ALWAYS gets overlooked. Its in the service schedule at about 40-50k miles but since most people are out of warranty at that point and therefore getting serviced at cheaper independents, it gets missed.:D

I had a rear bearing go, the evidence was gear oil dripping off the back plate.

The garage only changed the seal but after only 2 weeks the seal went again, and the garage then changed the bearing.

There was no noise with the failed bearing though, the first sign was oil.
I guess not all bearings fail this way though. Look for any oil contamination, and check play in the rear bearings as suggested.
Also check the bearing on the front of the diff, and also the universal joints on the prop shaft. These should be regularly greased but again get overlooked.

Its a good point, I had a bearing go at around 40k miles with my second Terrano and it gave zero warning, just broke up and started making a noise like a banshee......cost me a LOT of money because it took out the half-shaft as well and the only place I could get it done in a rush was those robbing bar-stewards at Frogs Island.:(

I am about to do the same with the van - Half shaft bearing kit from milners is £31/side.

Wheel off, drum off, brake shoes off, four bolts off and slide the half shaft out, replace bearing (may need heat), put you new inner and outer seals on, slap back together and then fill the oil on the diff with some fresh!
