The car is making a chattering noise (gear box area) but only under the following circumstances.

When the clutch is let off.

although when the transfer box is in neutral and gearbox is in gear the noise varies in tone through the different gears.

Although the car quietens massively when the car is revved, whilst in neutral on the transfer box.

When my father in law owned the car the noise was very bad so we fitted a new clutch kit into it and the noise remained the same. I then bought the car and fitted the box out of my old mav ( that was not known to be noisey) to find the noise is still there just not as loud.

Have tried molyslip and multiglide to no joy

PLEASE GIVE M A SHINING LIGHT

sorry scott,

it could be the clutch release arm is worn.

clutch centre plate spring worn.

lay sharft in gearbox bearings worn.

or possibly the transfer box worn.

no doubt that one of the knowledgable members will be on soon and we can get to the bottom of the noise.:thumb2

Is the noise there when you put your foot down on clutch pedal?

got the same problem on my 02 plate - rattly in neutral with foot off clutch...in fact I can make it worse if i lift off very quickly. I'm expecting a gearbox rebuild to be the only way out.....did you say you'd fitted a complete gearbox off your old truck? Was that noisy before you swapped it?

no cant remember it being noisey when it was on my old mav and did fit the transfer box on with it.

the noise goes when the clutch is pressed down

same here - so you fitted a good gearbox but it didn't sort the noise then?

noisy box

HI

Initially best case scenario could be the thrust (or thrush cos it can be aggravating) bearing. However it could be the bearings on the output shaft.

But as it was a quite box previouly I would say thrust bearing.

Lesson for us all me thinks, if it can be changed on the way, money and availability aside - change it.

My oppo did not listen, changed the water pump on a CVH engined escort convertable, left the belt cos it looked ok and 3 weeks and a snapped cam belt - 1 new cylinder head later (from a breakers) = not so lots of money but plenty of nagging from SWMBO as it was her car.

Hope all is ok

Thanks Paul:thumbs

Theres always an argument on this one, because some say if the thrust bearing is bolloxd it makes a noise when you dip the clutch, while others including at least one auto mechanic on here (and me) think its noisy with your foot off the clutch....and if you Google the subject, you find the same two camps...who the hell is right???:confused::confused:

With your foot off the clutch the thrust bearing isn’t spinning or in contact with the clutch pressure plate, so how can it make a noise?

well having put that one to bed, if Scott has fitted a working gearbox but still has the rattling noise, what might it be otherwise?

mine is a new bearing unless its faulty?

Clutch pedal down noisy, clutch pedal up quiet its a good chance going to be your release bearing. If not 99.9% sure its not.........and thats based on personally using at least two to destruction in the past :lol

Is it defo the gearbox?

Is there a possibility you dislodged (polite term for bent slightly) the shaft or other component when you were lining up or shoving everything back together last time ? I saw that happen on a Sierra and it made a noise then the clutch assy exploded

RTFM David...:doh we both rattle when our clutches are OUT. and my joybox hasn't been swapped...:):):)

If you aint had your truck from new you dont know whats gone on in the past ;) my sierra lasted more than a couple of thousand rattley miles before it went tits up.

Just because the cogs move doesnt mean it works properly or isnt worn, presume nothing...........thats the mother of all **** ups :naughty

Dont discount the thrust bearing completely. On a cav I had it made horrendous rattling all the time, amplified presumably be the bell housing ................in its last few hundred miles of life ;)
