Hello guys :) (1999 2.7 TDI)

I have a strange noise from my left hand side front hub. It sounds a bit like "grinding" especially when turning. I have mounted manual AVM hubs 2 yrs ago without problems. The left lock selector feels a bit easier to turn than the right selector. I have been using the 4 WD everyday during winter but mostly on the 300 meter dash to road from the homestead. I spent the winter in Russia and the temp was a lot of the time -15 -25 C.

Any help and advice will be appreciated as always :thumb2

Regards, Lars

Lock the hubs, drive in 2WD for a while, then try 4WD and see if the noise changes

Thank you Banshee. I have tried that. Sometimes the noise seem to be gone. The noise have been there a few days now. I can hear it when i roll the window down. Would it be an idea to open the AVM hubs? The selector does not fell like the other one at the right side when turning it.

There shouldn't be much to go wrong with the manual hubs, I'm sure you can run without them fitted, take them off and run in 2WD and see of the noise is still there

It could be brakes binding or anything, rule one thing out at a time :thumb2

We're here for you mate

If you're running without any hubs on you'll need to cover over the ends to stop crap getting into your wheel bearings :thumb2

steering stops need a blob of grease ? :nenau ....... ignore me I know nuffin :lol

Thank you both for chiming in :thumb2 Will open the hubs and see what the oil in the diff looks like.

Cheers!

There is no connection oil wise between the front diff and the hubs.
The hubs have grease only.:thumb2

I know :) I just want to see if there's something in the hub or maybe the oil in the diff is full of water or whatever.

Cheers!

The hubs are not handed, so you can swap them over, see if the noise moves.
Should help to see if it is the hub or not.

Hello guys and thank you for the input!

I have changed most parts(joints, rod and so) on the steering as i needed front end alignment. Nothing seems to be wrong with the hubs or the wheel bearings. I also changed the oil in the front diff. It took only 1.3 liter and not the 1.8 according to manual. Well the sound from the front is still there when i go to 4 wheel drive and turn the steering wheel. Best way to describe the sound is a crunching much like if you put the wrong (non LSD) oil in the rear diff. It's not a pleasant sound at all! Last time i tested was on grass.

Cheers!

if it is CVJ's then you should only get noise in 4 wheel, as other wise although they are tuning they are not under load, Rick

Yes the noise is only there when in 4 WD. With locked hubs in 2 WD it's not there. Any hints on how to inspect the CV? Will it be enough just to remove the rubber boot for a start?

Cheers!

Nothing you can do with them other than replace, Rick
