Can anyone help? Just bought terrano 11 2.7 tdi se 1997
the front wheels are not engaging in 4 wheel drive high or low,
car jacked up at front, selected a gear (2nd) selected h4, prop shaft and drive shafts locked, both front wheels still turn........
What am i doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Drive is getting to the hubs but not turning the wheels, is there a free wheel device? it's got me stumped

hi ya

[/FONT]remove your front wheel and strip down the front hub and see if the bits are in place if they apper damaged you replace with manuel hubs from milner 4x4 for about £150 ish delivered good luck mate

Freewheel hubs mate :augie S/h scrap yard about 15 squid
You need some forward motion to engage them. So if they're not doing that then probably the brake rings broke:doh
Undo the six alen key bolts on the hub and have a spy inside.
Do us a pic if unsure what you find. Have a look at the download section too as I think there's a section on FWH repair:thumbs

Thank you for that, I'll visit the download section too.
Will let you know how I get one,

Did you select H4 with it in the air?

You need to drive forward a couple of yards in 4H or 4L to engage the freewheeling hubs.

If you simply engage 4wd and jack it up the wheels will just turn and the shafts stay still. If you were to leave it in 2wd and turn the front prop by hand you should e able to generate enough torque to lock the front hubs in, then select 4wd and try turning the wheels but much easier to just drive it a couple of yards in 4wd before jacking it up.

If that still doesn't work then most likely someone has either broken or removed bits from the free wheeling hubs - see above posts.

Hi have stripped the hubs and found a snap ring (think thats what it's called)damaged am now trying to find new one.

thanks for your imput
