Was driving home on Saturday when during a gear change heard a nasty crunching sound and then no drive to the wheels. Help! I had thought it was just the clutch going West. But the garage think it may be the gearbox. My lovely car is a 2.7 T2 tdi of 2000 vintage. Anyone got any ideas??? Or a spare gear box and clutch in the Leeds Bradford area. :(

you could try thornton breakers in bradford (queensbury end ) they break jap 4x4s

well if your garage does not know if it is clutch or box I don't reckon much on the garage, my hearing is shot but I could still tel you what was wrong by listening to it, and so could Swifty, Rick

agreed with Rick, I think it should be plainly obvious to a garage. Its a big huge expensive job if its a gearbox, and if it was, you might as well have the clutch done=more expense. BUT, if as you say there was a big crunch then no drive, thats not sounding too good. I think you need absolute confirmation of the issue....

i know nuffin , but a big crunch and no drive , isnt neccesarily gearbox/clutch.......could be transfer lever jumped into neutral ......oreven transfer box...... but then i know nuffin so ignore me lol

It's a strange way for a gear box to go. Normally with the T2s the bearings start whining then one of the lay shafts collapse. Then it gets jammed in a gear. Do you do much towing ??

When my gearbox went I had a VERY loud knocking noise on letting out the clutch, twas ok then for about half a mile and a couple of gearchanges, then the knocking noise again, oil all over the road and no drive - recovery to a local gearbox specialist came next.
Gearbox overhaul (apparently an internal bearing had failed, smashing the innards to pieces), new clutch, transfer box overhaul while they were at it, and me £1900 lighter, and all this a week before we were due to drive the beast to Spain to start it's new life there!
Don't want to appear pessimistic Gerald of Airedale, but you could be looking at a second mortgage - my thoughts are with you bud!

If it turns out to be the transfer box, got one here spare, Rick

Hi All,
No message from the Garage yet. Incidentally its also on Thornton Road so could be good news there. Thanks so far for the replies and Solarman I may take you up on your kind offer.

Hi Folks I'm in a really good mood now. Just spoken to the Garage they say its definitely the clutch worn through the centre. Yayy!
The confusion arose because the speedo wasn't reading anything which led them to beleive it could have been a gearbox problem. Hmmm!
Don't know what I'm so exited about I've still got pay for a new clutch.
Thanks for all the advice and offers of bits. :thumb2

I was just going to reply that it sounded just like my clutch on both occasions, one last year and then 8 years previously. I had mine replaced for £150 labour plus price of clutch at a place in Queensbury.

Jim

PS who ever replaces the clutch get them to change gear oil at the same time.

I'll bet you heaved a sigh of relief, wish mine had been "only" the clutch - cost of the gearbox rebuild took a large part of our savings for the trip to Spain.
We nearly called the trip off, or considered scrapping the Terrano and buying something else with the money, but then we thought, whatever we buy for £1900 could break down on the way there, and it turned out to be the right decision - car has done 15,000 miles since the gearbox problem and the only issues have been new shocks all round for the ITV (Spanish MOT) and a new ignition switch (the common non-starting problem) plus some other minor things I have fixed myself thanks to the advice and information of the good members of this excellent club!
Best £10 I have ever spent was joining this lot!
