when i shift from 2wd to 4wd nothing happens, the 4wd light indication does not come on eithier.I have look at the manual at removing the free wheeling hub and it says "Set the auto-lock free-running hub at the condition “Free”." how do i do that? and any ideas why the 4wd wont work.

not sure what that means, if you have auto hubs, then they engage autmatically as the name suggests. If you have manual ones, you have to get out and turn the dial yourself on both wheels. as for why the light doesnt come on, could be a connector switch loose/unplugged or fuse issue, but im not certain with your year of vehicle...

whats the easiest way of knowing the 4wd drive is working?

Youve lost me :doh :nenau

Put it up on axle stands
Get in it
Select 4wd & see if all 4 turn
Or
Put it in low 4wd & turn it should feel hard & may knock

&

As above, it may just be a bulb gone

If there manual hubs you have to get out & turn them

If there auto you dont

My Terrano R3mR is an Automatic and the 4WD mode selection is just a small switch with the usual green wheel plan illumination on the dash.

Its dead easy to tell its driving all four wheels when you come to go round a small roundabout as the steering feels a bit like a threepeny-bit as you turn. There is a definately knobbly feel to the steering at low speeds and this increases with lock.

In a straight line you would not know its in 4WD, it pulls out of sideroads better and is less inclined to spin a rear wheel in the rain.

yeah, thats what id do on the gravel. round the back of our house, we have a long gravel track, thats where i test mine, but even still you can "feel" the front wheels moving. another way is to simply give it some beans regardless, if only the back wheels go, then your 4wd aint working. wont harm the car on tarmac for a few yards...

Hey Clivvy, next I visit your place I gotta try this track out:lol

Just a few yards slowly in low box on full lock you'll soon be able to tell if the fronts are driving.

dont try it on the beach at caister .. your car will sink in the soft sand , and you will have to be towed out by a tractor . amazing the stupidity of some people isnt it ? :doh:eek:

its a nice track. goes round the back fields, up past the school and right round to a main road. its very rough, gravelly, pitted etc, perfect for testing the 4WD, you and Jim can pop down any time for testing purposes!

in fact, if we really wanna be naughty, we can take the cars up onto the school field, did it once with my Fourtrak, theres a steep bit onto the field at one point...

and do donuts?:D

theres a couple of spots where you can do donuts, JUST, but if you screw it up, its a 20 odd foot drop...! up on the field, im not sure the caretaker would be happy..!

Theres also a crackin spot at the back of Leeds Bradford Airport, started off as a viewing area but too rough for most cars now. There used to be a little sign from Leeds City Council saying don't do that but it was last seen being towed off by a landy:lol

Try a tight turning manoeuvre, reverse on hard lock is best.....in 2wd it will perform normally. In 4wd you will quickly get transmission 'windup' - immediately recognisable as a kind of skipping at the tyres as they try to unload the stress.

If it does that, then your 4wd is fine and its just the light thats knackered :)
