Does anybody else have similar problem with their Nissan Terrano.

I have a Nissan Terrano SE TD 2.7 2002 short wheel base model.

I live on a hill and from cold start 99% of the time I have to go down the hill as I do not have enough power to go up the hill.

The engine does not have a problem revving when cold or hot and does not create blue smoke.

Before I buy any new parts I would appreciate help?

Or is this a common fault with Nissans?

hi, I have a 97 TDi. from cold, i have lots of power, i had lots of power even when I had faults (now rectified) I'd strongly suggest the MAF. Then perhaps fuel filter? I'm pretty sure that from cold, these cars have enough power to get up hill, may be slow, but should be there. I live ona couple of hills, and i tested mine earlier today after new fuel filter, so went up one of the hills and it was fine.

Nige - a healthy 2.7TDi like yours should pull up a hill like a train, absolutely no question.

MAF could well be a problem - its not that expensive to swap as I think all the later ones had the cheaper Bosch MAF fitted, but it could also be some kind of cold start/running gizmo/solenoid/thingy not functioning properly....u/s MAF would present itself with poor running at all times.....someone like Timbo could probably advise best....:thumb2

Obviously 99% of cars are going to be sluggish to a certain degree at cold start due to the higher frictional losses internally mainly from thick cold oil in engine, gearbox and axles.

Many ECU controlled engines purposefully restrict power when cold anyhow.

My TDI is noticably sluggish when really cold and needs at least 5 miles before it will give 100%. However i wouldnt have a problem going up any hill in 1st gear from cold!

Certainly cleaning the MAF would be a good start, and also ensuring its been recently well serviced with the correct oils / fresh air / fuel filters etc...

Have the 2.7 TDI long LWB and it is sweet to hear it start up especially in the cold. Just turn the key and I listen with glee to the diesel engine jump to life. No problem with going uphill after a cold start. Did have problem getting up hills a few months after buying it but since MAF was replaced it flys up hills.
