hi new to these ,bought a nissan mistral M reg 2.7 td auto (jap import) last week and searching through some old post think i have a problem with the overdrive when cold ,vehicle keeps droping down a gear then back up when driven at a steady 35-40 mph till warm ,but does not have this problem if o/d not engaged.
also in the instrument cluster there is a bit with ATP which does not light at all but the switch by column does light for a few secs when ignition on don't know if that will cause a problem or not?
i want to check auto oil level but cannot find where to check atf level ,have looked all around and underneath but can't find where to check or fill autobox, spoke to a local lad that does alot of 4x4's and he thinks the only way is to drain autobox and refill with correct amount but did't know where to re-fill
any help or advice ?

thanks

Hi Jamie, welcome to the club. I don't drive an auto so really couldn't give you much info. What I can suggest is if you don't know much of it's history it may not be a bad idea to replace the ATF anyway. We have lots of members on here with your type of vehicle so you will get some good advice coming through, however bare in mind that it is good weather and a bank hol weekend so replies may be a little slow over the weekend (could be wrong) so don't get disheartened if you don't get a lot of replies straight away.

PS try putting your vehicle details in your signature as it saves typing them in everytime you need help.

hi jimfree.

i have the exact same truck as you so hopefully can help with a few of your problems.

1.. the ATP light will only come on when you engage the four wheel drive system (the extra gear knob next to the auto selector)i would advise that you donot engage the four wheel drive system on tarmac only on slippery surfaces or loose gravel.

2.. the switch by the column is for the auto gearbox mode it is a 3 position switch marked power at the top normal in the middle and hold at the bottom. In power mode the gearbox will hang on to the gears a bit longer before changing allowing for a faster getaway  . in normal mode the gearbox will change at its most desirable shift points (everyday use). And in hold mode the gearbox will pull away in second gear ideal for starting off on a slippery surface. this switch will light up for a few seconds on start up this is a diagnostic measure for the autobox.

3.. the autobox can only be filled from the autobox dipstick tube located on the rear of the engine behind the rocker box cover. with regards to your problem of dropping down a gear then back up it would suggest that the fluid needs replacing or topped up.

4.. welcome to the club.

hope this helps a bit.

Hi and welcome to the club,

I don't have an auto but have owned other auto's in the past the way to check the level (and I stand to be corrected) apply handbrake, start engine, put the car into the drive gear, release bonnet and put it up on the stay using the dipstick stresspuppy told you about remove it wipe it and then redip this will give you a reading onthe dipstick of how much oil is in the box.

Sorry can't help with your other problems, but I hope this helps.

Hi jimfree, if you open the "Downloads" section at the top of this page, and then look in the "Work shop", you'll find a couple of downloads (w25 & w26) that will answer you questions.

thanks for the help finally found the auto dipstick ,took for a 15 mile drive then checked with eng running as described in w26 in downloads .the oil appears to have alot of air in it ,and hard to read where the level is .i think i will drain and refill with fresh atf fluid ,how much does it hold ,i looked around and think it should be 8.5litres is that correct?
be along time to fill through dipstick.

does my auto gearbox or engine have any diagnostic on them if so where am i likely to find the diag sockets
thanks

Hi Jamie, For most accurate check, engine should be reasonably warm.
With the engine running, go slowly through all the gears ( Reverse/Drive/ Drive 2/ Drive 1 and back to neutral slowly, allowing a few seconds in all the positions. ( This ensures that the ATF is distributed properly throughout all the box). If you are short like me, you will need a box or milk crate to stand on, and you will find the ATF dipstick at the back of the engine on the driver's side, and it is quite difficult to see, being about 5 or six inches below the top of the engine, right at the back.
On the dipstick you will see 2 sets of levels ( hot & cold). It is more accurate to check her HOT.
To top her up, you will need a piece of plastic pipe with a small funnel inserted in one end, and place the other end in the dipstic tube , topping her up with DEXRON II ATF.
If you have any probs, send me your e-address and I will scan the page out of my handbook and send it to you.
All the best, Matt.

at last changed oil ,only 3litres came out and very dark .put 3.0l back in and tested putting in to gears twice then dipping ,it was low ended up adding nearly another litre of oil and is alot better but it still keeps kicking down when drivern at 40-50 steady with overdrive on ,tends to do it more while warming up .
i been looking at other posts and think it might be g/box oil temp sensor related
does anyone know where +the part number of to get this part .if not in one of the post it said it could be done with a 50p resister does anyone have anymore info on how to resolve this way?
