Hi people. Wonder if I could get some advice.

I've just had a new starter motor fitted (£251.00) and now the thing makes a noise when starting from cold. It's like a short grinding noise, and only happens the first time the engine starts, for example, in the morning.

The problem is, there was no noise from the old one, it just stopped working. Now the garage where I had this fitted (I was always wary of these guys) tell me that if the bendix is a bit worn then further work may be necessary, and I'm sure they will be asking me to pay for it.

So am I being stiffed again here or could it be that coincidentally the extra work just needs doing?

All help greatly appreciated.

Neil.

I don't know if our motors have abendix drive but if they do it's part of the starter. I'm sure you'll get more replies on this.

1st thing I would ask, have they put the right one in. Is it new or recon?

It can make a noise when it doesn't engage right with the flywheel. The bendix on the starter motor (cogg with teeth) jumps out when you turn the key and engages with the teeth on the outside edge of the flywheel and turns the engine. There a 2 types of starter motors for T2's. One with a nose cone and one without. Both work as I had both in mine and so has Tubbs, but they need the same numbers of teeth.

Cheers for the info lads.

The mechanic was waffling on about teeth on flywheel being worn etc, but it didn't make this sound before it went in, so why now? Anyway, he's had it back and fiddled, so I'll see how it goes before venting my fury on him.

Incidentally, I enquired with Nissan, and was given a price of around £350.00 plus VAT, part only. Thanks, but no thanks Nissan!!

Cheers again for the answers boys, I will check the new Starter at the weekend for compatability etc, although it seems to be starting ok for now.

Could be right as i believe that the fly wheel stops in the same place everytime and this maybe why the new one makes a stange noise now as the old one matched up with the worn teeth / parts,

Hope i am right in what i say.

Mav.
