New member looking for an X-Trail

Hi everyone,

I've had quite a few cars! ( 30+ and counting ) over my 30 years..I've just sold a discovery and I am looking for an 2002 onwards, X-Trail, manual, diesel for under £5k. There are a few around 4500 on the autotrader but dealers are usually overpriced.

So if anyone hears of one ?

Not worried too much about mileage but looking for condition and service history. Extras as SE would be great but again not essential

X-Trail

I've had a few landies ( 2 x series 3, 2 old range rovers, 2 discoverys ) and I have enjoyed them BUT fun, ability AND comfort dont quite go together unless you have mega-bucks !

I have a question about an x-trail I have seen for under £3k :-

2002 52 NISSAN X-TRAIL 2.2 Di SE+ 5 Door , FSH

but it has done 167k miles.. I dont know nissan engines too well.. is this a lot ?

I will do under 8k miles a year

Dont know about the Xtrail, But the terrano has a fantastic engine (London taxi's have them fo rthis reason) They pull like a train, dont get stuck very often either, i used my dads to pull 44 ton trucks out the snow 2 years back, thats why i got one. It could be the same engine, i really have no idea on them.
Also they dont look dated even one 20 year old still holds its own on the road.

I know there will be people on here to give you some good advice, mine is dont buy the first one you see.

Why are you after the Xtrail, any reason?

I had a 3.0 nissan patrol once which was a great car but it only did around 30mpg on average and when the turbo went cost me an arm and a leg..

I am always open to suggestions..

be carefully as the x-trail has known problems with turbo,intercooler the dci engine is renualt so say no more:lol

Can I ask a quick question about the terrano 2.7.. will it run on biodiesel unmodified.. that might at least give me a choice.

I thought the x-trail was bullet proof.. I didnt know about the turbo..thanks

So is the terrano engine (2.7) more reliable ?

yes the 2.7 can run bio u modded so can the dci but the 2.7 has another point up its sleave it can run 100% veg oil in summer un modded so can be cheaper then bio

yep 2.7 t2 can run bio and 100% veg oil, very reliable engine, pulls like a train and can more than handle the fun if you want to go off road, to date the most expensive thing to be done on my truck is the tyres

Do you need a 4x4? As theres plenty of cheaper cars that will do 50+ mpg on a long run. Seems odd to go for a 4x4 for mpg. Although it helps if it drinks less.

X-Trail

Why a 4x4 is a good question.. I guess one of the reasons is that a 4x4 combines usability in all weathers, robustness and also size without looking like a bus.

One of our dogs is 16st and the only cars that have ever fit him have been the large 4x4's.

Estates are out of the question as they are just not big enough and MPV's have the rear pair of seats which often mean its difficult to fit a decent dog guard and also the roof tends to be a bit low..

The Nissan Patrol and Disco were great in terms of room and the X-Trail seems fine. Not sure about the terrano as I have not looked at one yet

pre 2004 xtrails are di engines which are nissan built , not quite as powerful as cci but much more reliable not got turbo/intercooler probs of dci + if your careful can return 40mpg also doesnt use 5/30 oil is 10/40 so service is cheaper just dont go to A nissan garage :thumb2

The newer Xtrails are renault engines, hence the troubles :augie
T2 may have image issues these days, but engine is generally pretty damn reliable

But it all depends what feedback THEY are getting doesn't it.

I'd agree the T2 is not as reliable as other Nissans, but thats not difficult when you're comparing it against little gems like the Micra. And most of them work for a living, not ponce about with a garden trailer on the back with a few dead shrubs in. I've done 350,000 miles or more in five Mavericks/T2s over the last 14 years, and always hammered them.....but they've been serviced properly with the right bits and I've only broken down once in all that time with a dodgy wheel bearing that broke up with no warning.

If it wasn't for their pathetic fuel consumption I'd be driving them for ever; sadly its time to get rid of at least one of the two we now own.

All cars have their weaknesses but the vast majority of the T2s issues are pretty easily addressed - plus its easy to be put off by older trucks that have been neglected by their owners...oil levels not maintained, servicing left etc..etc.., you can't expect a 10-year old truck to be like a sewing machine and moaning cos you can't get out an ABS sensor thats been welded in for a decade doesn't reflect the usefulness of the car.

I can only bow to comments from people like Timbo with his tech and hands-on knowledge of the XTrail. I'm sure its a nice car but I've always heard them to be unreliable at times, plus at 6'2" my head bangs on the roof so its pretty useless unless you're japanese LOL!!
