Hi there to everyone,

I bought my 2001 3.0 TD GR Nissan Patrol 2 months ago and I've been really chuffed with it. I've been to Sout Wales ith 6 passengers, 1 large dog and lots of luggage and it never skipped a beat. Since then I have been to Norfolk and Devon.

So why I am asking for advice you may ask ?

When I bought the car it had 3 months warranty and as I dont know these beasts well yet I'm not sure whether the sounds from the turbo, engine etc is right or wrong so I wanted to either find a good local specialist garage or preferably an expert member who can give it the once over. At least then if anything isn't right I can try and get it done under warranty.

I also wanted ( this is going to sounds stupid ) someone to give me an expert eye's view on how to operate the 'toy's on the thing. For example I have stayed in 2 wheel mode all the way so far !

Any help would be appreciated..

I live near Sandbach Nr Crewe Cheshire

Cheers

Peter

Welcome to the club, sorry I can't help with the turbo, but you should stay in 2wd for what you've done.

These things only need 4wd when the going gets really tough off road. When I last had a Patrol I often used it off road in 2wd and it coped comfortably.

your engine is same as mine turbo does whistle a bit early ones had problems with pistons cracking i would have thought any problems would have surfaced by know!

Advice

Thanks for all the advice so far..

Does anyone know of someone in my area ( Cheshire ) ?

Cheers

Peter

There are plenty of members in your area or around, hopefully they may come up with someone for you.

Diesel Bob is reputed to be excellant. I know some of our memebrs have used him in the past, is Blackburn too far for you? Straight up the motor way. http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/index.html

Patrol Advice

Thanks for the comments so far but I'm a little suprised that I have not heard from anyone in my area or had any recommendations made to poeple in cheshire or staffordshire.

I only have a few weeks left on the warranty so I guess I will just have to use a local garage unless more info from the club appears.

Hi,

Can we have a think about this one for Smallzoo.

We have a lot of members around the Staffs and Cheshire areas, So can someone in these areas help out by recommending their local garage that has given them a good service or just a contact number of a garage that they trust or have had a good relationship with.

We have the correct procedure for operating correctly the 4 wheel drive, I will see if i can find it unless someone can find it before i get a chance.

We will try as much as possible to help.

Regards, Mav.

if you want to get seriously off road apparently a 3l navara lsd will fit in patrols front axl trouble is not many 3l navaras around breakers if you need i can copy navara handbooks relevent pages for gearbox levers shifting speeds etc

Sorry I didn't realise you didn't know to engage/disengage 4wd.

Stop. then engage hi or low by use of the lever, then drive as normal(ish) you will notice a considerably differance due to the gearing and may want to try driving off in 3rd gear on the flat.

To disengage, selct 2wd by use of the lever, then checking behind you, reverse about a metre or so to disengage the hubs.

As to when to use 4wd, thats more tricky as each situation is differant, really only experiance can show you that. Its easy to engage too early and all too easy to leave it too late  If you'd like to attend a green lane day with us, I will be more than happy to show you and go through it with you on a range of non damaging terrian to give you the confidence to try this yourself.

But please, any more questions just ask, sometimes you have to be a little more specific with me as I tend to assume that everyone has a basic knowledge of these things.

new Member advice

Thanks for the detailed reply on when to engage 4x4 I will try it and certainly try and attend one of the green lane days.

I hope as well that the comments about cheshire/staffs members contacting me will bear some fruit..

Thanks

Peter

I'm up on Merseyside, have a good independent garage locally thats about 1/2 mile of Juncion 7 of the M62 who is pretty 4x4 friendly. Let me know if you want more details.

Just found this post, sorry dont know of any garages down sandbach way, i asked elswhere for garages to be trusted and didnt get much of a response, doesn't give confidence does it!! i have used one in warrington called warrington diesels. they are a bosch service centre and seemed ok.will be going for service soon and will let you know if any good

on the 4 wheel drive thing, you can shift from 2H to 4H on the move(at below 25MPH)

you can shift back to 2H at any speed but as soon as you can stop and reverse 1 mtr to release hubs

for 4L you should stop and put main box in neutral and shift in one movement( pressing down). same for shifting out of 4L

and DO NOT use 4H or 4L on tarmac!!!!!

hope that helps
