Hi guys,
this bloody 2.4 petrol is at me again... I thought Nissan made reliable engines!

Still got the timing chain issue, which to fix will cost about £350.00
Then I need a new Rad - £160.00

So i'm already over £500 just for the timing chain swap.

Then my mate tells me he thinks i've got a valve burning out... :doh
(this has not been prooven, just his suspicion)

So before I go pouring hundreds of pounds into an engine that may need hundreds more spending on it afterwards I thought i'd seek some advise.

Whats the likeliness of me getting a recon engine? Are they available? Does anyone know a rough price?

Does anyone know of a mint low mileage 2nd hand engine?

Is there anyone out there who knows the 2.4i engine well that could give me some advise based on experience of working on these engines?

Thanks, any feedback is greatly appreciated :thumbs

£350 for timing chain, the bits are less than £50 (dont pay Nissan £88 for a chain with two shiny links on it) buy stock chain £20 and mark the links yourself, leaves £300 for labour for a four hour job, I will have some of that eh, regarding an engine from another motor, most likely have to do the chain anyway it is a fault with them even with the modified tensioner, Rick

rads can be gotten for under £100 - believe me I've looked everywhere ! It'll probably be a recon one but they come with warranty so no worries. 1/2 hour job to change the rad.

Rick knows his spuds.

A recon engine could spell even more trouble

Yeah been thinking that myself, could just be opening a new can of worms with a used engine.

Best price I have so far for the timing chain kit is about £90.00 without sprockets, with £140.00. I know a garage thet just charged £200.00 labour to do the job, which is where I worked out the £350ish cost.
The problem is I believe they have a silly plastic tensioner that shatters, so a simple chain wont do the job I dont think.

RICK - do you know ehere I could get cheaper tensioners etc?

As for the rad, it has to come off to do the chain so I must have a replacement when the job is done. Best price I've had so for is £160.00

If anyone knows a way I can do the job cheaper please let me know the contact details, car is getting desperate and i'm on a v tight budget unfortunately

Why dont you use a s/h rad? Should be 30 - 50 squid,try cncfabs:thumbs
Do you have time to do the job yourself? I'd have thought if you mark everything with tippex before you strip it , then it should go back the way it started:augie
Checkout the manual:)

Not a job i'd fancy tacking from what I hear... bit of a shitty engine to work on I believe, plus mines got all its gas gubbins attached to the top of the engine.

I bought a second hand rad, think it was off ebay. Was told it was a minter when it arrived it was almost as bad, fins falling out everywhere.

Anyone know of a mint second hand one? :)

I've just taken delivery of a near mint rad for a 2.4 , thought it would fit my 2.7 but the pipes are different (both come off the same side at the top and bottom.) Yours for £80 delivered.
