Righto folks, planning to move the solenoid on my winch and put it in the engine compartment so need to pick up some more cables.

Existing cables (according to the manual) are 2 AWG (~33mm2) so to minimize voltage drop I was just going to use 60mm2 battery/starter cable. Thoughts?

Also the earth cable from the solenoid to the winch is only 10 AWG (~5.5mm2) is it worth using a bigger cable or can I just use a longer one of a similar size?

Cheers

Rob

problem using bigger cables from solenoid to winch the holes for the cable into the solenoid box might be small and the thicker cable might be harder to route inside. I'd open it up to see how tight they need to go from box/grommet to solenoid.

Did you say you were thinking of getting a snorkel as this may affect your space in the engine bay?

Yeh plan on getting a snorkel eventually, so that's a very good point bud! :thumb2 Hopefully going to fit the solenoid in next to the battery (opposite side from the air filter) worst case though there is quite a lot of dead space next on the nearside where the air filter is so should hopefully be okay if it the solenoid has to go there!

Consider using cable for a welder, lots of places will make up cables 35~90 mm2 with crimped lugs. The cable is much more flexible and easier to handle, it also pretty tough.

If the winch also gains an earth path via its connection to the chassis then probably not much to be gained by increasing the CSA of that cable.
