Been having a discussion with the wife today about motorway speed signs. The variable smart motorways have the speed limit signs with the round red circle around the edge.
However, older motorways have the amber mateix signs with flashing amber lights at each corner, can be mounted on a pole in central reservation or on gantrys. These signs can also warn of lane closures too. These are the original motorway signs.

The signs with the red circle are a maximum speed limit, no doubt about that.

The amber matrix signs, are they a limit or advisory?

I don't know, but they're definitely putting these signs closer together these days...

Old Type Matrix Signs

I am of the view that the old matrix signs with the amber flashing corners are ADVISORY.

As we all know they are often left on long after the fog has gone. These used to be operated via Police HQ Comms Rooms in each county. Might have now been moved to the Highways Agency.
Naturally if you ignore them and have a shunt you will be in the wrong.
