Took our WJ for it's MoT today as it expires at the end of the month - felt pretty confident it would pass.

I casually asked them to adjust the handbrake as has not been holding very well over the last 4 weeks or so.

Tanspires not adjustment but oil contamination on the brake shoes due to weeping half shaft seals. Booked in for next week, apparently the half shafts are held in place with a nut so Diff Cover has to come off as well!

Only good news is its just the seals, they are not a part of the axle shaft bearing. I need to try to squeeze two more years (hopefully) out of the WJ before we make do with just the one Jeep.

Ohh Nooooo.... I don't like to hear this...:doh

Cost,cost,cost is everywhere

shame,more cost involved.

Yep the perils of running an older vehicle I guess with a bit of luck that will be our only unexpected bill this year !

Depending on my health etc I might when it starts to become a money pit upgrade the WJ to a WK2 3.0 litre (like Clive's - something much newer) - it will be hard to justify running 2 everyday cars when Wendy retires in October next year so we will see.

It passed today am £728.22 lighter though..........groan

Well picked up the Jeep WJ this afternoon - all done.

Had a phone call yesterday to advise me that when replacing the rear half shaft seals you also HAVE to replace the bearings due to a really odd design / layout. Its hard to explain the layout but you have a drive shaft that is retained by a bolt inside the diff - better than a spring ring I guess.
Then there is a sort of hub within a hub layout where the bearing is fitted, if I understood right the seal fits between the inner side of the bearing & the axle tube.
You can't get the seal out without dismantling the bearing, the original was a taper roller now replaced with a conventional bearing with a collapsible spacer. Brake shoes were oil contaminated - rear pads were done whilst it was all dismantled - rear discs sound.

This upped the parts cost quite considerably. Labour was a reasonable £189 inc VAT, full price Mot £53 the rest was parts including diff oil, rear handbrake shoes & rear brake pads.

This video shows it better but does not mention having to undo the end nut in the differential.

Am keeping my fingers crossed that is going to be my only major repair this year,

The mind does strange things. lol

Lets hope so... nice to have it all done..

I have even convinced myself that the rear differential is much quieter due to the new oil !

P.S. Pretty sure the later Jeeps have a different design so don't worry.
