Hello again troops, anyone still here want to talk engines ?
I rebuilt the black pearl engine a couple of years back and after about a 1000 miles it was dead.
In essence a bad hone wore away the piston rings resulting in massive blow by.
Took it out stripped it down and ever so carefully rebuilt the bugger.
Last week we tried firing up . It started but it now "hunts" like mad.
We suspect that high lift cam or its timing.
Unfortunately my phone has eaten my memory card making photos a challenge at the mo
Any road up, can anyone suggest how I can find actual TDC without taking the head off?

Simple Pete, unscrew a rocker on number one and lay the push rod to one side, rig up a lever to push the valve down with a dial gauge on the valve, get the piston to the top as near as you can tell then apply pressure on the valve till it hits the piston then get someone to rock the engine back and forth till you get the highest dial gauge reading, do you have any knowledge of the rd28t lump, Rick

Cheers Rick one answer worth a tenner right there 👏
What sort of 2.8 lump info are we looking at ?

For real accuracy it would be better to compress the valve spring and remove the collets as it might not possible for you to keep regular pressure against the spring, Rick

OK it turns out I dropped a ball cock. Managed to refit the cam but retarded one tooth instead of advanced one tooth
Heres a quick video of the bag of spanners trying to run in retarded mode.

So, after some spanner action I've refitted the cam to the advanced position
Also advanced the fuel pump one tooth . Right or wrong ? I don't know anymore....anyway here's the video of the new timing version.

What do think guys ?

That makes the pump 2 teeth advanced, I think that is way too much, Rick

Pump is advanced one tooth Rick ?
However I'll put it back to stock pump timing tomorrow. Just made a poor assumption that if cam timing advanced, then so should the pump ??

OK here's one for y'all.
Is the mech fuel pump drive wheel the same as EDC drive wheel ?
I assumed they were BUT it seems there may be a different timing position.
Anyone know ?

You have bitten off a big lump there then Pete, best I can suggest is do a spill test on your pump to determin No 1 injection point then set it from there, Rick

Cheers Rick. In the time it's taken to write this my mate has sent me the link to a Russian youtube terrano fan.
Turns out there is a difference and what's more it seems to be two teeth different :D
He describes the running rough it causes as if he'd just seen the Black Pearl engine running :lol
So tomorrow the pump timing gets changed again, fingers crossed :naughty

Best of luck then Pete, I hope to get my shims by Saturday and then sort my followers out, Rick

Parts seem to be a nightmare just now. So much stuff "in transit" or bloody quarantined
I needed some dishwasher parts last week. The supplier in Germany said they're not sending to UK at the moment blaming Brexit and covid :(

Quick update. We've round and round the houses here but set the pump back to Z ZZ timing. Engine just refuses to run. Today we tried adding a spray of diesel via the air intake while cranking the engine. It runs like this :augie
Is there a way of testing pump pressure while still fitted to the engine ?

Yes Pete, using the pipe you used for the spill test, fit an injector to it, hold a bit of cardboard about 6 inches from the spray end and crank the motor it should leave a nice circular ring of fuel, be very careful, the spray will penetrate skin easily with dire consequences, if it does not spray at all then check your stop solenoid, fuel etc, even if the pray is badly uneven it should run, Rick
