Hi chaps,

Can anyone clear up my confusion on the viscosity and quantities of fluids I need for my T1 as I'm getting conflicting answers for most of it. 1993, 2.7td, Automatic

I'm after:
Engine
Gearbox - Dexron 3, 7.4litres
Transfer case
Front diff
Rear diff

Even with an aftermarket oil cooler I managed to overheat the trans fluid the other night. Can anyone recommend a low profile fan to help this? Slimmest I've found is 2.5" which won't fit on the fan in its current location...

Many thanks

Rustic is your man here mate!!!!!!

Where is he???

It's past his bedtime, I'm sure he'll catch up tomorrow, probably very early.
:thumb2

Well past my bed time lol... sometimes I'm in bed By 6 pm :doh I also wake in the night, as you can see by the time of this post.

With my chemo, it's a three week cycle, I'm now at the end of week 3 so I am good, Chemo again on Thursday, then I'll be bad... very bad. It's a form of poison after all, and it feels like the biggest hangover you have ever had, but lasts up to a week. After all, a hangover is really alcohol poisoning.

This is how it goes.
Thursday week 1 chemo... virtually bed rest for a whole week, in bed by 5 or 6 pm. Sometimes in bed for 4 consecutive days. First week I eat very little, I loose 6-7 lb.
Week 2 usually better, but this last session I contracted a chest infection, had to have intravenous antibiotics, and 3 visits to hospital, so did very little, and I also had heavy side effects from the vaccine that helps produce more white blood cells.
Week 3 much better, I can usually get some jobs done, but still get fatigued very easily. This is the week I tend to drive. I drove the Mav this week, first time in 6-8 weeks... I so love driving my Mav. This is the week I eat like a pig... often putting the 5 or 6 lbs back lol. Weight management is very important, or you can loose weight and not have the energy to fight the poison as well as the cancer.

Anyhow... that is how my time is spent :doh:doh Hey ho... still here. One good week in three is better than no weeks at all. :thumb2:thumb2

My good week next session will be checking the mav over pre MOT, but might have to throw it in anyway... and fix it after, should it fail. That's not how I normally work. I am so frustrated, can't complete even the simplest jobs :nenau I aim to tidy the garage, the floor has become the dumping ground, normally every item has a home.

Back to the Mk I Terrano,
this is not the same as the MkI Maverick that I have, the MkI Maverick is the same as the earlier non intercooler Terrano II

However, the diff and transfer box, engine oil etc on the Mk I Terrano should be the same as the Terrano II, I cannot advise on automatic fluids, no experience of those, but they "might" be the same too.

There is a section in Briggies support documents that highlights the oils, but if you go to various oil companies, even euro car parts, they will list a different set of oils to the Nissan recommended.
If I compare Maverick MkI to Terrano II, the oil specs are different too, even though it's the same car built in the same factory, using the same parts, but with different logos lol

I assume the Mk I Terrano has a limited rear slip diff, if so it needs lsd oil.

Nice to know, someone is running a car much older than mine lol.

Sorry I can't be specific on tge actual oil, but I hope I have helped.

Best regards,
Uncle Rustic

Dexron 3 fluids and better

I have posted on this in the past as I have run automatics for over 30 years with never had a box failure or issue. I have always used the best ATF fluid that was on the market at the time and as the later fluids are backwards convertible I have used the later fluids including the synthetic ones. If on a budget then don't pay for synthetic.

The advantage of the later fluids is they have better temperature / viscosity properties and most importantly have the additives to keep the seals in good condition.

This link is helpful I used Fuchs Titan 4400 fluid in my Terrano & Hyundai.

Thanks Rustic, am I right in saying the R20 is the manual I'm after?

Yeah, T1's have an LSD in the back. I've had a look on various websites but alot don't even recognise the plate, maybe because it's an import. If they do, diff oils are never listed, nor is the transfer box.

Does anyone have a reg number for an UK T1 or early T2 I can try? PM if you prefer.

Haha, my other car is even older! '91 Nissan 300ZX twin Turbo :) Sold my '78 Reliant Scimitar last year as well.

Your chemo sounds horrendous, I hope it's all over soon leaving you fit and well fella!

Mac, I didn't even realise they're up to dexron 7 until I just looked. Do you go for a premium brand or would for example the Carlube branded ATF be adequate?

Thanks guys

The T1 is either a D21, or WD21, apparently the W stands for Wide, as the chassis, running gear and Body is wider than the D21 it is based on. If there is not a copy of the WD21 manual on here, I do have a copy I could Email you.

I have the same issues with our WD21 regarding the reg, there was never an actual "UK" one, as I understand it, they are all grey imports from either Japan or New-Zealand. It does mean there are many parts you can not easily get in the UK unless your local motor factor are prepared to do comparisons to other Nissan Models.

A word about ATF capacity

The capacity for the ATF fluid is based on a drained gearbox and torque converter so in reality you will only be able to drain less under 4 litres probably nearer the 2.5-3 litre mark.

Like Blocky10 states this means regular changes is the best way forward. On my previous vehicles the Terrano & The Santa FE I drained and replace with identical quantities every 12 months after doing an initial extra quick change after a couple of weeks.

My BMW has a sealed for life unit so I leave that alone. Can't do the Mercedes myself as it has to be filled from the drain plug using a special tool and a metered pump as there is no dipstick tube.

My current Jeep had a fluid change a couple of months before I bought her when the pan filter was replaced. I will have to look at that in the summer. I hope I will be able to drain and top up via the dipstick tube as it has one with a disposable locking tab.

Thanks guys.

Ferret, is the copy you have a .pdf or similar? The one on the site is an executable file which my phone won't open and I'm not back from work for a while.

Didn't know they were all imports, makes it even cooler! Do you have any contacts for breakers as I'd like a few parts?

Thanks Mac that's interesting I didn't know that's how slush boxes worked regarding fluid changes. Is there a filter anywhere to change? Does the transfer box use ATF as well?

Nissan did an update re the transfer box a few years ago, it was to do with cold morning running often bought the 4 wheel drive into operation due to oil drag turning the front diff, so ATF was recommended, for future use, Rick

Thanks Rick, don't suppose you know the quantity do you? I'm guessing 10litres will be able for slush box and transfer box?

Parts off the top of my head are :
-Plastic screen for dials, speedo etc
-Plastic surround that fits around the auto shift lever

There are more I just can't think right now and I'm away with work so can't look

Auto takes around 8.5 ltr but you will only drain at one time about 3.5 to 4, transfer box 2.3 ltr, I probably have instrument screen but nothing Auto related, Rick

Great thanks, 10l seems to be the cheapest way to buy it so perfect.

Do you want to PM me regarding the screen? How about the section where the radio sits, I have an aftermarket stereo packed into place with cardboard missing any type of cage or surround :doh. There's definitely other bits but the brain's frazzled this evening...

For all these bits I need a pic, there ar many variations, Rick

Headrests like these for the back and I think I need a couple of the plastic covers that sit on the top of the seat that the headrests pass through to go into the locking mechanism. I'll send a pic when I get home of that and everything else.
