On Thursday got to drive a new Mercedes 350 D G Wagon I think they look real Retro. It was the Gaffers Motor and it has about 800 miles on the clock.

After a 20 mile drive I came to realise what an old fashioned drive it was especially the steering which gave new meaning to the term 'wooden' and that is an insult to wood !

The spec was just over £75,000 new and I was so disappointed in the drive - I really wanted to feel it was great. Then yesterday I drove a 20 year old G Wagon 280 D and the steering far better !!!

Made my R3mR feel like a RR when I drove home !

I enjoy driving our J reg G Wagon every day.Smooth and comfy.Sagging a bit at the rear but then so am I so no complaints.!:D

I prefer the older Mercs anyway they were built to last and seriously overdesigned.
I had a 300 TE 4-Matic on a G plate and it was a great motor.

I guess as the G Wagon has a ladder chassis some compromise is to be expected on the steering feel.
Sadly even the older ones seem very expensive so out of my budget.

ah the g wagon. pretty good off road well old school of course.

think diff locks in both axles.

luxery wagon to rival old rangeys though with styling well
almost of an air portable landy. doesnt the back door have
little fixed windows to side like a series / defender.

usually swb but seen lwb, and military versions, even soft tops.

on subject of air portables saw a really tidy one other day
with hard top, pretty rare on road these days though guess
plenty in trialing and pure off road use?

always wondered if could apply the look to a lwb landy say
station wagon using lwb g wagon as a cue!

Eh

The old 1/4 tonners were horrible,

The draughts and discomfort of an MGB without the style :lol:lol

Mind you we used to fight to use the ones we had they were more fun than the old petrol lwb's of the day :thumb2
