As far as I am aware, no, because I read somewhere that the angle of the coutersink could be different for alloy vs steel.

I am not 100% certain, but you need to check before using.

Have you got a spare steel wheel with the short nuts on.if so just compare them to see if the taper is different.
Nothing the angle grinder won't fix:naughty

well i have alloys on me terrano and a steel spare came wit car from nissan so must be ok or they would`t do it or would they ?????

same here len but i am putting toyota rims on, which seems quite a common swap. the steel nuts wouldnt be different would they?

only joking with the angle grinder mate:lol
I got a set of wheel nuts from milners.
if the taper is different it wont grip the wheel and tighten up onto the hub but the wheel will in effect still be loose even though the nuts are tight.

Some toyota alloys do have a different taper, infact some are shouldered. Check carefully in your hole  if it's countersunk you'll probably be ok. Also check you have enough stud sticking out past the c/s so you have enough nut on your stud :thumbs

ar, thank you, had visions of taking skin off my fingers lol

banshee you are welcome mate.

they do appear ever so slightly counter sunk but not a great deal,(i suppose they wouldnt compared to thicker alloy?), thanks for your help everyone i shall pray for dry weather to have a proper look :(:(:(:(:(:(:(
cheers all

Also consider "Thread Engagement" ie the length of threads actually engaged.

Some say... that the minimum thread engagement length should be the same as the diameter of the bolt. Theories vary on this, so it is an important issue to find out.:nenau

Eg a 12mm ie M12 bolt should have a minimum of 12 mm of threads, so if the thread pitch is 1.25 mm then there should be a minimum of....
12 / 1.25 which is 9.6, which means nearly 10 complete rotations of the wheel nut, once the thread starts to engage. So Check your nuts?...

If you have less, then the nut could strip.
Also torque is important, YOU MUST use a torque wrench, standing on a wheel wrench is not scientific enough, as wheel wrenches vary in length, and so does our weight...:doh

well, they are definately countersunk, by approximatelt 50/60% which i assume is normal, there was a lot of old paint build up which i have cleaned away. the terrano spare wheel nut for the steel wheel fits the c/sink shape perfectly and nut should cover thread properly fingers crossed :)
cheers,mike
