Hi everyone, Im a newbe to this site which is fantastic by the way but not to the world of 4x4. I took some time out but have found their appeal too much to resist!! I have just purchased a ford maverick 2.7tdi 1998 and I will be off to croydon on saturday to collect it! :!:
anyway not having had much contact with either the terrano or maverick i wondered if there was any general advice/tips to look out for? any immedeate mods i should be considering or need to do as a matter of urgency? :?: to my knowledge this vehicle is standard and just had a full service.
any tips would be appreciated

Hi Damien & welcome to the club  I would say the 1st think to do would be to give it a good service & replace the oil in the rear axel (LSD oil only) as old oil often make then very tail happy in the wet  The auto front hubs sometimes play up, if it's sitting nose down then the torsion bar prob could do with adjusting. If you have a look through the site & the downloads you will prob find all the answer you could ever want

if your looking for tips on what to check when you pick it up and maybe use as bargaining chips to knock the price?

anyway before handing over your hard earned cash, check the 4wd works properley there are loads of threads on this, but the front hubs need to be properly engaging and disengaging , dont rely on the light on the dash find some mud (or do a search on the 'hubs' on and read up)!

also water pump and leaks around that area, and that front tyres are wearing evenly.

to be honest neither of these are big problems and woulnd't stop me buying but, they might help you on bargaining!

I am sure other members will come up with better advice!

was that what you had in mind? welcome to the club!

Spot On!

Thanks very much for both the welcome and the tips...exactly what i wanted.
Been reading up on the maf sensor and mini filter, i justy needed a general pointer as to the apperent faults with the model and what to look out for so thanks again. and keep it coming

Yes, if the engine feels gutless the usual culprit is the MAF.
It is just after the airbox. If you disconnect it and there is no noticable power drop the MAF is knackered.

there are 2 types bosch & hitachi. Bosch are cheap and fail more than the hitachi. I don't think anyone on here has replaced a hitachi MAF????????

Welcome and enjoy your new toy

Gearboxes can start to get noisy, especially using the gears to slow down at junctions, you can sometimes hear a whine.
It is usually the input bearing, which can be expensive to replace as the gearbox is a big heavy lump.
Passenger foot well carpet often damp, carpet around the rear door as well, look out for off road damage underneath or any oil on the rear wheel back plates, could be a faulty bearing/seal, or brake slave cylinder.
Best of luck with your purchase, and welcome to the club..

best regards, Rustic

Look carefully at the front wings just above the plastic trim....if there is any bubbling/rust you can bet your mortgage on there being a lot more below the trim....I took my plastic trims off both wings today to investigate the small amount of bubbling...below the trim the wings were rotten...I have had to cut away lots of wing and rebuild them using aluminium mesh and body filler...took me all day..I was not that particular in getting a perfect finish since the trim covers practicaly the entire repair...

Check sills as well...these vehicles do rust.. 8O

Check all electrics work properly including lights, wipers, dash warning lights, sunroof motor, window motors, etc etc

Got It !!

Hi everyone
Well picked up my new toy yesterday... Big Smiles all the way home. :p I thoroughly enjoyed the trip even though it was 160 + miles!! Best test drive ive done
Good news is (touch wood) that most of the points everyone was kind enough to mention were absent  I noticed a distinct lack of smoke under acceleration, non at start up either which is good
Having driven round in a 2.5 rover sterling it did seem a little slow to accelerate so i will try disconnecting the MAF to see if theres a difference in performance... it may just be the change though :?
Im interested to know if the MAF from the terrano like the ones advertised on ebay interchange with the maverick ones? anybody know.
I suppose the best way to get a correct one is to use the part number of the old one but terrano parts seem more available on ebay :|
One thing that was apparent was an occasional clunking noise not all the time, noticed it changeing down a couple of times for junction / roundabout in 169 miles...could it be a bush?
thanks everyone

thanks everyone

Could be a bush, there are a few bushes front and back, you really need to locate the direction.

Could also be the exhaust catching on the gearbox mount.
Shock absorber?
Also check the ride height, especially at the front, it may be contacting the lower bump stop at the front. These vehicles do nose dive a little while braking.
Check also the the hubs are disengaged. You can always blob a spot of white paint on the front drive shafts and move the vehicle a few feet to check the shafts haven't rotated.
Doesn't sound a major problem though.

Could also be worn UJ's on the prop to rear wheels...get under vehicle and grab hold of the prop..pull and push the prop up and down and from side to side at both ends..there should be no or very little movement...if the prop waggles about suspect UJ's.

The clunking noise could also be caused by a bit of back lash in the diff...if it turned out to be a liitle wear in the diff its an easy fix using shims.

the MAF sensors come in two types, the Bosch and the Hitachi. If you see a new one on ebay it will be a Bosch. I bought a used hitach taken out of a Maveric and it works in the Terrano, I only bought it as a spare because it is the only one I have seen for sale.....bri
