Mav 2.4 Sump Removal

Gents,

Is it possible to remove the sump insitu. The hope is that I may be able to remove the pistons and hone the bores and refit with new rings as compression is down as low as 100psi.

Think it would be easier to pop the head off and hone with the pistons in place.

Rings Stuck

I was hoping to remove the pistons and replace the rings and hone the bores to give a nice crosshatch so as the rings bed in correctly. Hence the sump removal. The worse case is an engine out job.

Think I'd recon the top end first, could be poor valve seats that are giving you poor compression, you can always test the compression before its all back together to save ruining too many gaskets in the process if it will ultimately need a bottom end rebuild.

Sump removal

Gents,

The head has been refurbed by myself and I have access to a cracking bit of kit that puts a vacuum on the inlet and exhaust ports to prove valve seat integrity. This is after all valves had been removed and cleaned and lapped in.
So the question still stands is it possible to remove the sump insitu.
The engine was overheated by the previous owner. I have fitted a recon head and I suspect that the rings have become stuck in the piston lands, the other symptom witnessed is that the rocker cover fills with fumes on cranking that would suggest piston blow by.

Should be possible as the front diff and cross members can be removed but as to which is easiest I'd say its difficult to say.
