Have you tried changing the air filter and cleaning the MAF (Mass airflow sensor) and its housing??? The reason i say this is I had the same problem a few weeks ago and found the air filter was crap. This let the MAF get dirty and then the problems occurred.

there may be crap in the MAf housing - clean the whole area (very carefully it is delicate) with switch cleaner and see if it improves. Also clean the contacts in the snesor plug - it may just be dirty contacts.

Lastly if it happens again, disconnect the sensor wires from the sensor by taking out the plug. Turn off the engine and on again. Your fuel consumption will be crap and the power will not be as good as if the MAF was connected but it will give enough power to get you home. I done this to get to our caravan site. If you do this, remember to strap the loose wires up - last thing you want is for them to wrap around a moving bit of the engine!!

edited to add that since you have been having probs with it for 12 months - maybe just a bad contact???? Someone else will be along soon to give more informed advice - I am a greenhorn.
