With my gearbox being on it's last legs & my legs starting to get past it I have been wondering if it'll be poss to convert manual to an auto  I know I would need to replace the pedal box, gearbox, fit a g/box oil cooler & flywheel IIRC but can you's think of anything else I would need :?: would I have to do some wiring :?
Then theres the next prob  mine is a SWB & most auto's i've seen have been LWB & I don't know if the props would fit/match up as I think I would have to use a box from the earlier square head light model due to costs of buying the whole vehicle to obtain all the parts.
Any advise, info or views will be most welcome :p

interesting idea sweety.

like the sound myself, especially should box or clutch fail.

in mark one t2/r20 square headlights only aware of auto
in mistrals. afaik the uk autos appeared on twin round head
light models with higher spec.

have seen the odd mk2 swb mistral on ebay so presume
would auto as well.

wanted an auto at time and if known then would have got
a misty but then i wouldnt have got the tdi. without sounding
like a contradiction the perceived costs of repairing a dead
auto put me off...but hey a manual can die too so i'd certainly
take the risk now. oh and it was the manual gearbox that my
mechanic pal quoted as being an issue on our trucks but how
many have failed on here?

seems getting under a misty would be a good place to start,
even a lwb as could be compared with a lwb manual.

good luck, watching with interest.

ebay item 230265737870

just out of interest, mind it does list as an exchange item.

hey just a thought, what about swaping in 3 litre at same time?

Unless you really really want an auto I would go for a straight swap for another manual - you should be able to get a recon manual box for less than buying a whole nother truck to get all the auto bits and whilst you will be able to break the rest for parts and get some of your money back you'll still only be fitting a second hand box.

With a manual for manual swap you ought to be able to do it in a weekend at home whereas the swap to an auto will involve jobs and parts you hadn't thought of, its even possible that it won't fit as some vehicles have different floor pan pressings for the auto, at very least the holes for the levers may well be in the wrong place.

Personnally I'm not particulaly keen personnally on swapping flywheels and torque converters etc over, these really need balancing with the crank and pulley as they were a the factory - 9 times out of 10 it won't be an issue but every now and again things will end up out of balance.

As has been said theres also the electrics side of things, that could trn ito a big job if the manual loom doesn't have the correct plugs on it to attach the auto bits.

Have you thought about getting the box couriered down to (IIRC) gearboxman on here. If you need to be mobile in the meantime what about buying a cheap run around with the money you've saved by not buying a second T2 and you can sell it afterwards for about what you paid for it - more if you're lucky. Take box out one weekend, gone monday all being well back that week and back in place the following weekend, any other little jobs can be done mid week, changing the clutch for instance... Have a look around for couriers who will pick up a pallet - you should be able to find a small one somewhere to use.

Continuing this idea,

does anyone know the differences if there are any
between the auto box found in the mistrals and the
one fitted on later mavs and t2s.

for example does the euro version have the ability
to select the hold characteristics as i believe the
mistral would offer. (upchange/kickdown) etc
