evening guys i going to buy a cheapy welder at the weekend and some 6mm steel and atempt to make my own winch mount

so it should be fun ive had a go at using a mates mig welder but thats about !!

any tips ?

should i completly remove the bumper re enforcement bar ?

i think the best way to make it by the look of things is to fix it to the chassis either side of the rad and bolt it through ?

ive seen someone else do it that way on here i think?

how will i mount my bumper back once the re enforcement bar is removed ?

I'd get the 6mm sheet bent first at your local smithy, makes it nice n strong. Take the bumper off completely and as you say fix to the chassis / bumper fixing points. Trial fit in cardboard for example and see how that relates to the inner support etc. There';s plenty of room for a secret winch tray and then a trimed plastic bumper bit.
Refit bumper to original fixing points :thumbs

only cheapy welder that will weld 6mm will probably be a arc welder.

Might be worth googling some info as im still new into the welding scene

my 100a mig will weld about 4mm max, might be cheaper to borrow your mates.

.

hi makeitfit sorry for the silly question but when you said get i bent first what do you mean ?

pop to a local blacksmith and ask what you think it will cost for a winch mount and drop in the conversation you will pay cash. :D

.

hi guys just an update on the winch mount its all fitted nowand wasnt to difficult to do at all.
i used 6mm plate and cut it to size and fitted it to the chassis each side of the radiator with new bolts i also cut the bumper support away and kept most of it to mount the bumper back on.

the tray i used i bought from winch it on ebay very nice plate powder coated and pre drilled holes for mount the winch itself.

ill post some pics if i can work out how to from my phone

hi guys a couple of pics of the winch fitted what do you guys think ?

i dont want to be a doom and gloom merchant but are you sure it will hold up to the stress

im just wondering about the penetration from the weld. it will have to take the weight of your motor and it was only a small welder if i read correctly.

i have seen nothing wrong.... does look neet all the same

.

hi larson the welder was actually done by a welder mate of mine i didnt want to ruin it !

it has been welded both sides and all the way round

6mm is thick and you need plenty juice to get the penetration.

my fault i read the posts and got confused as faz said his was only 100amp and i thought the op had a 100 amp welder

better safe than sorry, Always good to make sure.

.

the welder that was used was an industrial gas mig welder amps im not sure about but it was BIG the welder that is lol
