Hi All,

Possible looking to lift my 97 2.4 SWB Terrano. Don't want to go to too much expense as don't use it a great deal.

Now everyone mentions fitting LWB Springs to the SWB to lift by 2" and then resetting torsion Bars.

My question then is doesn't that make the ride harder which will effect both on-road and off-road driving? Or are the LWB springs of the same spring rate. (think that's what its called!)

Cheers

I can't speak for genuine springs :nenau but I have a catalogue for after market springs from motor factor & they all have same part number for all models 3 door and 5 door.
Listed as 417mm long 132mm dia 13,75 spring rate.

The LWB springs will give you a 1.5" lift not 2" & yes they have a higher spring rate so are stiffer, now if you truck spends most of it's time on road the stiffer springs help to keep the road holding good but if it's mainly used off road they will work fine but won't compress as well as the standard springs

OK so the Stiffer springs won't make the ride too hard on-road but will make off-road performance worse? Am I reading that right?

don't want to lose the ride quality on-road as its not too bad but also don't want to lose any off-road ability.

Yes, what he is saying is that they wont compress as well as the designed SWB springs. so when your wheel should squeeze up into the arch on good flex, it will do so a bit less. :thumb2

Cheers,

Do you know if it possible to buy longer SWB springs with the same spring rate?

Can't seem to find any.

The nearest thing I know of are the springs from Blood red offroad. Guy called Dave seemed to know what's what when I last spoke to them. +2" springs but std rate I think.
There are also some available from JimnyBits but not sure on their spring rate. Best ring them both up. I know the later is cheapest :thumbs

Thanks,

Winding up or re-indexing the Torsion bars, take it winding up makes the front harder but reindexing doesn't??

told you I'm a novice at this!!

No torsion bars will be just as soft really, You only re-index them if you run out of thread on the adjuster bolt. Have a look underneath everything becomes clear.

Cheers,

Will take a look and have a go, Jimmy Parts do a 2" longer spring for a SWB so guessing they are the same rating seen as they list a LWB one too.

Not sure if i really need to bother and if 2" will make that much difference.

Need to get some new Mud's so thinking about getting 31x10.5x15 if they will go under the arches ok.

I take it you've been reading my Project Thread

Lol.. actually No but will do so very shortly!!

Over time, all Maverick and Terrano front suspension sags, basically caused by the rotational torsion on the bars, when just sitting there 24/7
The bars start to barley sugar, and when you take the tension off, they will have a permanent set or twist. This is why you should never fit a second hand one to the opposite side of another vehicle, it will try to undo the set torsion, and fatigue could set in, and they have been known to shear.

The adjusters will take up this natural sagging, and can give some extra lift, but indexing, just means you are starting again, on another set of splines, a few degrees further around.

Cheers,

Never had a good luck at them not sure how much difference a 2" lift will make to the Terra if any!!

Am thinking about a new set of Muds so would maybe then be able to get a slightly larger set of tyres under there too.

Seems a few opinions on 31x10.5x15's as to whether they will fit without Mods or not. I have both a set of 15 and 16" rims so could use either, just a matter of deciding what size to go for or to keep with the std. size.

I'm running a set of Weller 15" Steel Wheels on my Terrano with BFGoodrich AT/S on in 31x10.50R15, they will rub so you will need to do a bit of trimming on the body, its easily solved with the help of an angle grinder, just make sure you underseal it aftwrwards to stop it rotting and rusting

The torsion bars def need tweaking now on mine since I've lifted the back up with some LWB Springs, looks like I'm driving a wedge lol

Take a look at my Terrano in my project thread in the link of my signiture below my post.
