I have the 2.7td and in the last few weeks its been blowing blue smoke out on start up and you can feel it hesitating/holding back. so thought it was time to service it. Replaced the usual standard stuff including a fuel filter.........its made no difference.

Takes a few extra moments to start and if you hold the revs at about 1500-2000 rpm it fills my drive with blue smoke and still holds back when driving.

Thanks guy

Theres this in the downloads.."How to clean the mini fuel pump filter on a 2.7TD" also your injectors (sp) may need cleaning.

On reading this it definetely appears that my filter needs cleaned too. Thanks for the in depth diagram of what to do.... I wouldnt have had a clue otherwise!!

Its the members of this club that put the diagrams together, moderators just point out what you may have missed  so its a thanks to the members for passing the tips on. 8)

Nice one, I shall try this tomorrow or tuesday and report back. Hope its that simple I was thinking all sorts of things may have gone.....I dont have to sell it now

I really should have a good look round this site, but I just get to watching the videos and thinking " christ, Id sink in that"

Come on a lane day in Derbyshire, you'll be truly amazed at what these vehicles can achieve in low 4wd

Yeah would love to do something properly with it. Its a shame to just keep it running on smooth roads. Not to far from me either!!

Still Id be worried about breaking the old girl.

The routes are normally on non damaging terain and I never take you anywhere I have not pre driven to check suitability. Occasionally you may suffer a scratch or two, but normally these can be polished out.

However, I must insert a disclaimer here and state that on any green lane trip damage may occur and niether I nor the club can be held responsible for any damage incured.

You will get dirty and muddy though, and I've yet to have anyone genuinlly compalin that it was too hard for them. You can refuse any section you don't fancy and just drive around. (Its not uncommon for this to happen on some wet days)

Cool! that sounds like something Id be into. May need to get some new front tyres though? When is the next one?

One on 13th Oct, but is almost full and maybe rough cos of the ground and vegitation at the mo.

Best bet would be 10th November for you, plenty of time to get tyres, and the vegitation to die back some more. Nothing in forums as yet(not had time), but its in the calendar of events on the home page so keep an eye open.

I downloaded the "cleaning mini filter" and started tonight!!

The picture is slighty different to what I have? I have a banjo fitment with the fuel pipe coming off it fitted to the pump, so I removed that and it had a mini filter inside it. So I have cleaned that and put it all back together.....was this the right thing to clean?? If so the car doesn't run any better.

Also my "water in the fuel" light came on today as did the "engine check" light . Evil or Very Mad

Do you think it may be a case of bad fuel?? Is there another filter by the tank like on land rovers??

4x4xford,

Firstly thanks for moving the post.

The tdi doesn’t have the mini filter as in the download, so you did the right thing.

What’s does it run like when hot is it still lumpy and smoking?

The water in the fuel light is put on by a float sensor in the bottom of the fuel filter, when there is water in the bowl the light will normally come on and off when going up or down a hill etc. I think the engine check light comes on with it as well if you have both lights.
I would drain the bottom of the filter and catch what comes out to see if water is present.
A bad batch of fuel will make the engine run badly and the last thing you want is water in the injection pump, as this will do irreversible damage.

There is no other filter in the tank that I am aware of.

By the way how often are your warning lights coming on, may be worth seeing if you have any error codes stored in the ECU it’s a simple job have a look in the downloads.

Well it only smokes when the engine is run unloaded, it doesnt when normal driving I can just feel the hesitation.

The water in fuel light comes on every trip I do, I get to my destination and open the drain. Then the light is off. Also while it is on I can switch off and switch on again and it will go out.

I will check the downloads.

Ok just down the fault code test......although it only did anything if I left the bridge in??

It reported fault 18 then 15. Fuel quantity adjuster position sensor malfunction.

Ive got the tdi model, if i follow the diagram up until the banjo fitment and then clean the filter will this make any difference to the problem? I dont want to go through it all if like 4x4xford if it makes no difference!!

Have you the same issues with your running problems as me??

It only took me 20 mins and Im glad I checked and cleaned it, one less thing to do. Plus after refitting my power steering belt it now doesn't make a noise.

4x4xford,

Both codes are pointing to the same problem within the pump. The water in fuel light may come on automatically with the engine check light, I am not sure on this as I only have an engine check light and no water in fuel light.
Have you found any water in the bottom of the filter? If not then try disconnecting the filter water sensor at the filter and see if the light comes on again.
If there is a problem with the Fuel quantity adjuster position sensor it would be worth while checking out the wiring and connections to it and a good dose of fuel additive may be worth trying.

I have to remove the complete drain from the filter to get anything out and it does seem very weak and not really smelling as strong as diesel. Where is the Fuel quantity adjuster position sensor? I will check it out. Thanks
