Low ratio won't select

Hi, Just got the Terrano last week and very pleased with it. The only problem I have at present is that I cannot get low ration on the transfer box. 2W and 4WHigh are fine. The manual says to get low ratio you put car into neutral press down on transfer stick snd slide into low ratio through neutral from 4WD.

Well I can't press down but if pushed right lever rotates a bit then pushes into neutral (the transfer that is). Still won't go into low ratio. Its like stirring a bowl of porridge??

Anyone got any ideas whats going on. Have sprayed linkage with WD40 to see if that loosens things up. Previous owner had never had it in low ratio.

the lever works on just one shaft on the transfer box, if it goes into 4 wheel and then goes to porridge, suggests that the pin has come loose on the shaft out of the box, or has the motor had a body lift? this I am told inter fears with the overall travel, Rick

No lift on mine

Hi, The car is standard for height so don't think it is that. Is the pin internal or external to the box. I fear I might already know the answer to this

just re read your post you should be able to push the lever down a little if not then it has seized, and will need freeing off, Rick

I had the same problem with mine....
On the outside of the transfer box is a "guide plate" fixed by 2 M8 bolts, pushing the transfer lever down allows it to negotiate the index in the guide plate. Chances are if it's not been used the downward travel of the lever is not sufficient to clear the index on the guide plate, preventing the lever from traveling fully to engage low ratio.
Easiest way to check is to remove the guide plate from above then check transfer box operation. It can be done from underneath the vehicle but there's not much room.

Thanks for that. That sounds like it is my problem. there is no downward travel at all.

Will get out the spanners and my under car "rug" tomorrow if it stays dry.

I tried from the underside but gave up and attacked it from inside. The part you need to reach is rifgt at the top of the transfer box, the exhaust severly restricts access from below.
BTW you could leave the guide plate off as a temporary solution.

Right Have had a look at the box from inside the car and it is as you described. The reason why I can't get low ratio is that the stick will not push down and clear the guide.

On mine the reason why I could get neutral is because the stick is able to rotate thus moving the pin that runs in the guide far enough to select the next set of gears (neutral). Hence the stirring porridge feeling.

The question is how do I fix the lack of up and down movement??

How do I fix the unwanted rotation in the stick

I've just joined and have a very similar problem. My 2/4wd selector works fine between high and low ratio but it will not push down for neutral. I guess I need to get the wd40 out! I'll have a look at the manual, is there an updated version as I'm not keen on downloading .exe files these days!

Welcome Darren, I've had this fault on multiple Terrano's now, have a look at Ray's snippet from the workshop manual, if you remove the guide and keep traversing from Low > High > Neutral etc it will free itself up. Should just be a case then of replacing the guide a slapping a bit of grease on it for good measure to ensure future operation.

i had problems with my l4x4 and nissan said it needed a replacement transfer box.i even got a replacement auto box with trans on it as they would not split it.took it all to ricks to change tb and he sorted it out in half hour.so i still have the auto box and tf box here unneeded.in the middle of the lever it has a bush and spring with a pin going all the way through side to side,my bush had split leaving my lever to be a floppy lever and no 4x4l well i got it once then could not get it out.good old rick.
