Hi all, i have a slight problem which i hope someone on here can advise me on please?

This evening i went to select 4 wheel drive to check it was all working as i have a pay and play day at Parkwood this weekend.

When i pulled the 4 wheel drive lever back it locks into 4 wheel high fine and the light comes on on the dash, as it should.

However, then i pushed down on the lever and pulled it back to select 4 wheel low and the dash light went out and into what appeared to be neutral, if i pull it back further it just seems to grind and not go into low box...

Any ideas is it something i can fix before the weekend?

First of all the vehicle should be stationary and the main box in neutral before using the low ratio gear box.

A grind implies that something is rotating.

BUT if you are stationary, then it could be the "gate" on top of the gearbox, this was mentioned a while back. Can get sticky with no use.

Has your truck had a body lift, as this can cause selection problems.
Edit... Yes just looked at your sig... You do have a lift.
Hope it helps.
Best regards,
Richard

hmm...not so good. i have read something similar on here somewhere, but i think MakeItFt and Stinka might have an idea, certainly Rick (Solarman) as im sur ei have read posts involving them in the past, ill have a dig aorund..:thumbs

Hi Guys thanks for the replies.

The motor was stationery when i tried to select low box and in neutral.

Yes it has has a body lift and an extension piece put on the end of the lever to lift the knob above the centre console.

I have the day off of work tomorrow so if it can be sorted i need to do it tomorrow....

ah yes thats the one!!

Simple fix. Cut the back of the plastic trim that goes round the lever. Then use Mr hammer to open the slot a bit :naughty Simples

i have had a look at the other post, regarding the slotted plate.

I will take out the centre console tomorrow and check it, also whilst i have got the console out i will try selecting low box, if it goes in then i will try modifying the console and the surrounding bodywork.

Thanks for the help and advice.

I will give you an update tomorrow when i have had a look.

Cheers
Stephen

i alway depress the clutch when selecting 4l & when deselecting it, & push down & back :thumb2

Good morning guy, quick update and a question....

I pulled ot the centre console end rubber gaiter covering the transmission hole and had a look at the guide plate and everything seems to be okay, checked the selection of the low box with the console out and it goes in fine.

So i have concluded that its the centre console that is stopping it going in, my question is how easy is it to get the transfer lever out so that i can try and bend the bottom part of the lever forward to stop it fouling the console?

the bolt is on a taper tho so you will need something to tap it out with

Quick update...

Ultimately i would say its the centre console and the gaiter and the surround holding the gaiter stopping the lever coming back far enough that is causing the problem.

I took out the transfer lever and attempted to bend the lever forwards but i have to say i wasnt impressed with the minimal amount i managed to bend it, i also trimmed as much of the plastic inside the console area as i could.

The situation now is that when i put it into low box i have to pull the lever back up slightly so that it locates in the guide plate properly.

However, it is now working again and usable so once again thanks to everybody for their help and advice.

cheers
stephen

Whilst i had it in bits i did try and take some pictures of the guide plate, they arent very good as i couldnt get a good angle, but the yellow arrow shows the plate

For all your bending needs apply huge amounts of heat. Once glowing red give it a good twatting with Mr Hammer or use some scaffold pole to lever bend it :thumb2
I just cut the gaiter trim and bashed the floor out the way  Simples

Unfortunately the only heat source i had was a plumbers heat gun (propane) which was no use at all.
Plus i couldnt have heated it too much because half way down the gear lever there seemed to be a widening which had some kind of rubber insert, so heating it too much would have melted that...

All i did was rest it over the open jaws of the vice and bashed the hell out of it...not that it really made any difference.

Anyhow it seems to be going into low box now so cheers all.
